Thank you - cellophane
the story of an invisible girl

Thank you
You guys are wonderful. Seriously. Thanks for all the comments and phone calls and sympathy and hugs and offers of assistance and everything. I may not have a car (heck, I don't even have a bike!), but I have some wonderful friends. Also, as you all have been so kind to remind me: I am alive and unhurt, and I should be grateful for that. I am really a very lucky girl. I love you all.

I am okay. I have some achiness in my neck and shoulders, and my left shoulder and wrist in particular feel strained and sore, but everything is functioning fine. The ring I was wearing on my left middle finger was actually broken from the impact, but even that finger only has a bruise on it! The police and the body shop guy are all amazed that I have so little damage to my person actually, given how my car looks.

I just spoke to the body shop guy, and he's been looking over my car, trying to figure out how much it will cost to repair. Once he comes up with that estimate, it will be the insurance company's decision whether to pronounce it "totaled" or whether to okay the repairs. He says his current estimate is that it will cost about 86% of the vehicle's price, and he is still looking up prices on some of the parts. (Because the poor car was so new, his computer didn't even have info for everything.)

If they end up fixing it, he estimates it'll take about a month and a half to do, since there's so much damage. A month and a half! Although I guess if they total it and I get a new one it won't take as long, but they probably won't decide until tomorrow or even monday. I need to figure out what to do about transportation...I can't bum rides off people for that long.

Among other things, the front bumper fell off on impact. It was lying on the shoulder of the road all day yesterday, and in fact several of my friends and coworkers said they saw it. Late last night (when traffic was light) my sister and I went and rescued it. I didn't like its being there all forlorn and stared at by strangers. Now it is sitting on the grass by my house. It doesn't look so bad, except for the fact that there isn't a car attached to it.

IF they total it, maybe you should check the crash test results on anything you decide you're interested in.

Re:

Actually, although the car did not come through well, I came through this crash very well....which is what the car is designed to do. It sacrificed its life for mine. Greater love hath no car....

Loss of Use Insurance?

Amazed to hear of your accident!
Glad that you are OK!
Sorry to hear of your loss :(

Do you have loss of use insurance?

Now is the time to claim it.

Re: Loss of Use Insurance?

Thanks. I'm not familiar with that term, but it's probably what we call Rental Coverage on an auto policy? If so, no I don't have it. Am very annoyed with my insurance company too, but that's a whole other story.

Loss of Use Insurance

SHOCK

Glad you are OK!

If you have loss of use insurance in your policy now would be a good time to use it.

Complain to AAA about their emergency procedures.

Get yourself checked over by the doctor pronto, I mean right now no fooling.

Hope you can still make it to Confusion!

I'm sure you've had enough advice....

....but if the car is truly that damaged, and the insurance company tries to repair it (because it will be cheaper for them to do so) stand your ground.

I can promise you.....you don't want a car that's been that severely damaged. Not only for safety concerns, but you'll get killed on resale value down the road. The car's value will be less than half, probably, of what other cars will be selling at that time.

Re: I'm sure you've had enough advice....

Yes, I'm hoping they'll pronounce it totaled. Not sure how to convince them to do so if they don't want to though!

Re: I'm sure you've had enough advice....

It's not easy, because they're not going to want to be stuck with the car either.

If they don't total it out, let me know. I have to think that they would, though.....

Re: I'm sure you've had enough advice....

It's looking pretty likely at this point; just talked to the body shop guy again. But thank you very much....if they give me trouble I will let you know.

holey moley

I'm glad to hear you're alright. I'm glad you're must stronger than the car rather than vice versa!

Thank god you survived that.

Crumple zones and ablative construction. Just thank god you weren't in something like a pickup with rail frames or you'd probably be crumpled yourself.

With any luck they'll total the car, but you should see into just how much they'll be paying you for it. Probably most if not all of the cost since it's so new. Does your insurance cover rental costs as well, becuase you may be able to get a rental while your car's in the shop.

Thanks....yes, I'm lucky. And when I feel mad that it was my new car that it happened in, I try to reassure myself that if I'd been in my old car (1994 model, no airbags), things might have turned out worse.

Yep, they totalled it today, but they're still deciding on the amount. It shouldn't be bad though, the guy told me they'll just subtract out my mileage (only about 400!) from the price I paid.

No, no rental coverage....*sigh*
