Candles on the cake
We had a geek-moment when C asked me how many candles I wanted on my cake. I suggested that 5 would be good, for 3+2 (since I was concerned 32 candles would burn down my house!). Then C said we could be really geeky and do it in binary. There was a quick pause while we determined that 100000 would be 32 in binary. "Perfect," I said. "Should we just light the one on the left, and leave the others un-lit?" He said we should, but upon further reflection I wanted more candles to blow out than just one. So we settled for putting all the lit candles in a row, using a contrasting color for the leftmost one to indicate that it was "on".

geeks :)

you just reminded me that when I turned 32, my dad, the biggest geek around (apple, meet tree, yeah, yeah...) said "oh wow - for the first time ever, we're bit contemporaries!" He has since turned 64, so we no longer are, but for a few years, we were!

And now you and I are bit contemporaries as well ;)

I did the binary candles birthday before last (30). We bought the little candles in the shapes of 1's and 0's. So I had 11110 on my birhday cake. My friends got a kick out of it, knowing me, and my family was all "what does THAT mean?"

Try taking the test in the above link, if you should entertain any doubts about being geeks.

Re: better late than never...

Strange, that email usually works...maybe LJ is having some problems.
Thanks, I'm mostly over it now. Will be glad when it's completely gone.
Hope you're doing great!
