Cell Phone Sounds
This morning, as I turned off the shower, I heard soft strains of tinny music coming through the bathroom door. This puzzled me at first, because I I hadn't left my radio playing. It took me a moment to realize it was the end of the little ditty my cell phone plays when it wants to alert me that somebody is calling it.

This got me thinking about the various custom rings people have on their cell phones these days. You know what I think would be cool? If when you called a person's cell phone, you could actually hear whatever tune that specific person's phone was playing. That would be neat, to hear their actual ring tone through your phone. A nice personalization. It would also make waiting for them to answer more entertaining.

Oh sure, technology-wise it's totally impractical, but I still think it would be a great idea.

I'm not sure if my new cell phone allows me to download or compose custom rings for it, although I'd like to. So far I've just been using one of the rings that it came with. I keep meaning to look into it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I was thinking about it though, because I know somebody who arranged one of his favorite songs for his cell phone so its ring would be more unique.

I was wondering what I would put on my cell phone, if I could have any song in the world. And I decided: I would like my cell phone to play You Are My Sunshine. What a nice cheery way for it to ring. Life can use more cheer.

Wouldn't it be great if, whenever you called me, you could hear You Are My Sunshine through your phone too? (Don't say 'no' you big spoil-sport. Just nod and smile.)

When I grew weary of You Are My Sunshine, I think I would switch it to Cecelia. That's another song that just makes me smile whenever I hear it.

What would you choose, if you could have any song in the world?

Vivaldi's "Four Seasons".

It's a stretch from "song", but my perfect custom ring would be the sound loop from Weird Al's "UHF" movie where he's calling Terri's answering machine.

"Terrrrr-ieeeeee. Teeeeeeerrr-IEEEE! Pick the phone! Pick up the phone! Pickupthephone! OH!OH! I'm in HELL! PICK UP THE PHONE!!!! TEEERRRRRIEEEEEE!"

Or maybe "Rubber Duckie" by Ernie.

What's really funny is that you commented after my comment of wanting Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". I'm sure people look at us sometimes and just shake their heads.

That would be fun! You would be your own phone DJ. People would call you more often just to listen to what you're playing today.

Since I got my cell phone a couple of months ago, I've intended to program in this song my brother "composed" when he was about three. It's called "the binkabunk car". I have a tape somewhere of him singing it, but I still remember exactly how it goes. Talk about unique!

On the other hand, if I could download a ring tone, I'd pick "Komakino" by Joy Division. It has a simple but distinctive and fast-tempo intro that would probably sound good on a single-tone cell ringer It is also one of my favorite songs, so it would grab my attention each time I heard it.

My oh my oh my! I'm crazy bout those kinky boots. I'm surprised Rennie doesn't have this playing as her theme music already. I have another ex-girlfriend who I have to send this right away. Thank you.

My goodness, more research shows that it was Patrick Macnee and an Avengers costar that I don't even remember! Wow, what trivia.

Yes, agreed about his singing and Honor Blackman. Now I want to see some Avengers episodes with her in them, I did love her as Pussy Galore. I think you've created a monster with your little 2-word post, I've forwarded it to two or three people so far, because another friend just spent $275 on Italian boots at lunch today...

Why don't you simply read your cellphone's owner's manual, download the music sequencing program from Nokia, and put the song on your phone? Or go to your service provider website and buy the ringtone for 99 cents.

"Went on down to the Audubon Zoo and they all axed for you". It's rare enough that I had to sequence it myself.

Yes yes, I should do all of that... Like I said, haven't gotten around to even looking into how to do it! I took an important first step today though: I put my manual into my bag when I left work today.

I do like your "axed for you" tune. (:

Nokia also has full manuals and docs online, you know. If I was right about your provider, you can just click on the link I gave you.

Thank you, glad you like it!
