Fire Test
My office building had a scheduled fire alarm test this morning. Not a fire drill, just a test of the alarm equipment -- so we did not need to leave the building. They had handed out fliers to each office notifying us prior to the event, plus they posted signs in all the doorways, so that it would not worry anyone when the alarms went off.

As it happened, I was running a bit late this morning because I had stopped to see my favorite barista on the way to work. I entered the building just as the alarm-test began.

I climbed the stairs to my fourth floor office like I always do. As I walked up those stairs, with the alarms wailing and the strobe lights flashing, wearing my heavy coat and carrying a bag over my shoulder, I felt vaguely like a firefighter. Bravely climbing up the stairwell, burdened down by heavy equipment, noise and chaos all around, heading into the middle of danger while everyone else fled from it....

Except that, well, I don't think a real firefighter would have been carrying a Starbucks cup in her hand.

Give firefighters more credit, they would have the Starbucks and the axe as they are entering the building!

Re:

Actually yes, since I'm in almost-all-black today, I think an axe would be a nice addition.

Re:

Black pants, black jacket, black boots, and (here it comes...) a black/gray/white/red striped sweater under the jacket (which you can only somewhat see when the jacket is buttoned).

Re:

Well. *grin* I didn't mention my "underthings", as they are not visible and therefore not really a part of my outfit.

However, if some swarthy firefighter offered to show me his axe if I showed him my... oh dear, I'm getting all off-track and distracted.

Re:

Ah, that's true, they'd probably need to roar their fire engine through Starbucks on the way!

You are right ofcourse.

They use thermoses. :)

Well I hear the hip firefighters actually use those hydration backpacks to hold thier coffee and drink it from the built in straw, that way they can hold that axe with both hands.

oooh, firefighters with camelback coffee dispensers! they are always so clever....

Sometime when you're at my house ask and I'll show you my axe. An air force special designed to chop your way out of a burning airplane with an insulated handle capable ot handling 10,000 volts we were told. It followed me home about 50 years ago and its still in the garage

You never know...

The FirePerson of the Aughts might just have had the foresight to grab a Latte on his/her way to the Station, and stick it in the cupholder in the fire engine...which brings up a question I'm not really sure I want answered...: Do Fire Engines HAVE cupholders?

;-)
