Race For The Cure
My mother is a 5-year breast cancer survivor. More than 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year alone. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

All of these are excellent reasons for me to participate in the local Race For The Cure. Funds raised by this event go to support local breast cancer screening, education and special treatment programs, as well as national breast cancer research.

It's funny, because a lot of advertisements for these sorts of walks and whatnot focus on the actual walking/running/biking/whatever. Ya know, it's not the activity that helps prevent breast cancer. It's the money. It doesn't matter if you go 1 mile or 300 miles; the distance is not going to cure cancer all on its own. The activity is just a way to encourage people to raise money and promote awareness.

So this June I'm walking (not running, not this year!) 5K in the Race, yes... but more important than the walk is my $25 entry fee and any additional donations I make/raise. I am therefore attempting to raise some extra money toward this very worthwhile cause.

If you are interested in helping out by donating to the Friends For The Cure, there is a very simple website which will allow you to donate via credit card in my name.

I'd appreciate any support you can give! Help find a cure for breast cancer!

Extra incentive: anybody who donates at least $10 can request from me a personalized photo, anything you want (rated PG-13), and I'll email it to you. Want a picture of my cat attacking a teddy bear, or wearing a sign that says "I love dogs"? Want a picture of my belly with "John Doe Rules!" written on it? Want to see my favorite bra? Can you come up with anything other creative requests? All ya gotta do is donate.

Reminder Needed

Remind me next fiscal month, too many conventions this month.

It will give me time to consider what picture I want, maybe the one of you modeling the Sluggy baseball cap? (;

Re: Reminder Needed

No problem, I'll probably post a few reminders over time. (: (:

Sounds like we're doing the same thing! Except I'm doing the English version of course. Walking or running 5km in aid of cancer research.

I'll sponsor you if you sponsor me! ;) Mine's not til July 7th though so I have a little while longer.

I'll be going for the personalised photograph, now just have to decide what I want... *evil grin*

Sure, that sounds good! Let me know if there is a way to sponsor you specifically, or if I should just donate in general.

heehee...I think the personalized photographs will be fun to do!

I don't have a website like you do, I'm afraid you'd have to do it via snail mail. You could send it along with your picture! ;) I only have a paper sponsorship form. I will hopefully have pictures of me doing it taken from a doting member of my fanclub (ie boyfriend) that I can put up to prove I've done it.

Looking forward to it. Hope it's nice weather!

My mom is now a 20 year breast cancer survivor! She still goes to a local support group showing women that is possible to be a long time survivor.

When you donate, does your name get published on that website, or anywhere else? If so I'd rather donate anonymously.
renniekins From: renniekins Date: April 21st, 2004 09:58 am (UTC) (Link)
When I log in, it will show me who has donated to my "collection". When others access the site, they see $ amounts but no names (if you look now, you will see 2 donatations).

I don't believe that your name is published elsewhere, but I admit I haven't read all of the fine print.

You know, once I got my mind out of the gutter, this really got me thinking. I mean, what a great opportunity to define goals in someone else's life.

I mean, you haven't set any kind of time limits on these things, so the possibilities are rather spacious.

For example, I could request a picture of you:
-- riding a unicycle
-- on a sailboat
-- waltzing
-- kissing a camel

Just how far are you willing to go to get my money?
renniekins From: renniekins Date: April 22nd, 2004 12:29 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wow, I didn't even think about things like that, yikes! hmm. Well, so long as it's not life-threatening, I'll at least attempt anything you ask for. (Though some might require waiting 'til my knee has healed more.) Some might require some cheating/creativity....like we're not exactly supposed to get that close to the camels in the zoo, but I could kiss a picture, a stuffed one, or hey a cigarette!

Go for it, be creative -- it'll be fun!

hmm. I don't know if I should sponsor you in the BC walk, my sister in the Aids walk or just give more money to ChemoAngels. How about this...I'll donate $10 for the walk for every person you get to sign up to be a ChemoAngel?
renniekins From: renniekins Date: April 23rd, 2004 08:33 am (UTC) (Link)
Where would I find info about ChemAngels?
anderale From: anderale Date: April 23rd, 2004 09:30 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm so silly, I should have included a link.
Here is the ChemoAngels website.
From: davidp5382 Date: June 2nd, 2004 09:40 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wow! ChemoAngels only accepts 100 applications a month. The month is only 2 days old, and they've already reached their quota. It says to try early next month. Like maybe at 12:01am! It looks like a really great program, too!
