February Gift
One thing I hate about v-day is the explosion of red and pink that occurs everywhere. The concept of a day to celebrate love is rather beautiful. The fact that, in a store, this translates to putting cheap red plastic around everything they sell is just repugnant to me.

Love is so much greater than red plastic hearts.

Another thing I hate about v-day is the stressing of couplehood. Stores basically only market to people involved in Relationships. If there doesn't happen to be a boy out there who wants to buy me something pink and disposable in the middle of february, why should that make me feel unloved? How awful is it that, on a day meant to celebrate love, so many people end up feeling inadequate and lonely?

Love is greater than can be contained by only two people.

So forget v-day, forget the red plastic hearts, forget the pink carnations. I want to celebrate love. Real love is not confined to just one person or day. I love so many people and things, but it's easy to get so annoyed and cynical about v-day that I forget to share my love.

So I'd like to offer anyone who reads this post a February Gift. Comment here, and I will tell you something I love about you. It doesn't matter how well I know you -- I'm looking forward to doing it, so please respond!

What I love....

I love that you always have a new perspective on things, or can come up with one.

Re: What I love....

I love the way you're passionate about math and teaching, and really the way you devote all of yourself to everything you do.

I love that your hello kitty icon has a skeleton; it's delightfully devious. I also love the uterus you knitted!

This old hippy often uses "Peace & Love" at the end of my cards and letters.

Nice post -- now, can I interest you in a plush Bun-bun with red hearts all over him? ;-)

Kim and I actually pretty much skipped v-day this year ... we've been on a long vacation which really has meant more to us than plastic hearts ... yay! :)

haha! He would kill you before you even got close to him with hearts.

I love that you are a genuine person. I love that you pulled the stinger out of my hand when that scary bee stung me, and I love that you introduced me to OtherWorld!

seriously... for a long time i didn't think we had much in common anymore... that's so not true. i'm glad that we've found newer common ground even as our lives have gone in our various directions (:

I love how much thought and care I've seen you put into your comments to your friends. I love watching you with your dog. I love that we've known each other so long through so much, and I love that we can talk about so much with each other.

Ok... tell me something. Now one thing I love about you. You seem to love life and go out and have fun. From trips to mountain tops to a LARP camp... you know how to enjoy life.

I love your optimism and your compassion. I love the fact that you are dedicated to doing a good job, even in a field where a lot of people aren't. I love the fact that you like v-day even though you're single!

I love that you are a father. I love having an Amherst connection on my LJ, a computer center one at that! I love your red hair, and I love that I stumbled across your picture on the cover of a magazine a year or two after I last saw you. I love reading about your son.

So what are my choices?

1) D'oh! V-day was yesterday, and I entirely forgot!
2) Whew! V-day was yesterday, and I didn't even notice.

My answer is #2. I spent my valentines day staining a new door for a new room in my basement. And spackling. And sanding. And working out. And working. I love that I didn't notice that it was v-day.

I love that you are a consistently polite and thoughtful friend. I love what you've done with your house, and I love that you are constantly seeking to improve your life. I love that you didn't notice it was v-day!

You're so right about Valentine's Day. I think it's just part of the way our culture at large is so fixated on couple-hood to the exclusion of other relationships. Also, I think your February Gift idea is terribly terribly sweet and thoughtful - which are also two qualities I see and appreciate in you. :)

I love the way you have with words, and the way you think about things. I love reading your encouragement. I love that you're going to Russia, and even though you're scared about it too, I love how excited you are!

Just say "Happy Hallmark Holiday", and ignore it otherwise. I don't do vday, happily Tegan seems ok with that.

I love your sideburns, no matter what your coworkers say. I love your mushroom soup. I love your idea for the fake scotch-tasting.
