Dental Doom
I updated yesterday, but I'm concerned I didn't do it correctly. I realize that's pretty embarrassingly self-important of a thought, to believe that perhaps hardly anybody saw my entry because it only got one comment. But I also received an email today that didn't sound like it was read either. So I have to ask: did I screw it up in some way, to make it now show up on friends' pages for some reason? If so, how? Strange, that.

I went to the dentist this afternoon, to get an old filling re-drilled. It was... okay. Meaning that I was miserable and freaked out as always, but actually it went quite quickly and more-or-less painlessly. Quick is good.

She only did one novicaine shot, but I think it was a big shot. Or a full shot, or however you'd put it. Because I'm still very numb, 2.5 hours later! Numb and hungry. On the way home from the dentist, I picked up some yummy Mexican food to make myself feel better about having been drilled.

I still can't eat it.

It's my lower-right-lip that's numb. Not only is it numb, but it doesn't really move properly -- I guess the muscle was numbed too. I smile, and it doesn't move. My mouth smiles around that part of my lip.

I tried taking a bite just now, hoping I could eat despite the numbness, and I had to cover my mouth with my hand to keep from leaking. My lip wasn't able to hold closed properly. That's kind of inconvenient! Not to mention funny-lookin'.

Come on numbness, go away. I want to eat my dinner.

Practically unrelatedly, I had a weird dream over the weekend. I wasted a whole dream's worth of brain-power on sitting around in a restaurant, enduring bad service. They wouldn't bring us our food. I didn't do anything about it, just sit there being annoyed. What a stupid dream!

I had another uninteresting dream that I was going to mention, but now I've gone and forgotten it. Oh well, it probably wasn't any better.

Completely unrelatedly, my feet were cold for days and days, because somehow my fuzzy slippers have become cat toys. I could only ever find one at a time, and it was always a different one, and always in a different place. But today I managed to actually find both slippers. Hooray, warm feet will be mine!

For our final random babble of the evening, here is a thought that crossed my mind while driving home from work last week. "I realize that I've probably grown less tolerant as I've aged. But in my defense, I truly believe that the world has become more annoying."

PS - I might go to Cleveland tomorrow. If the weather isn't awful. Just for a day or two....there are a couple of meetings in which I really would like to participate in person.

Nope... I read it today (I have quite a time delay for friend's list reading). I think it must be the talking-about-cleaning-curse... noone wants to comment or else be smitten by the same bug of accomplishing some cleaning.... or maybe that's just me.

haha! That makes sense: if we don't talk about it, maybe the house will clean itself....

"I realize that I've probably grown less tolerant as I've aged. But in my defense, I truly believe that the world has become more annoying!"

I, too, find myself saying things along the lines of "Kids these days...!"

And don't even get me started on the typical Wal-Mart customer. If ever I go on a shooting-spree, it will be in a Wal-Mart, 'cause those people need to go!

That person is clearly a really special friend. (:

I've just been on a time lag, that's all!

So, after this post, all I can think of is Bill Cosby. While you are distinctly cuter than he ever could hope to be, I still picture him, in the Himself concert video, complaining to the dentist that his bottom lip is on the floor.

Fuzzy slippers are a good thing. I haven't had fuzzy slippers since the fire, when they were on my feet standing around in the black water. Ah, nothing like standing around in shorts, a t-shirt, and big poofy slippers on the sidewalk. I should get a new pair. Ducks. I want ducks.

So, about this dream ... could it have been a premonition for being unable to eat?

And in closing, the world is, indeed, incredibly annoying. Go yell at the damned kids to get off your lawn and you'll feel better.
:)

Oh my. That was comic genius. ;) Thanks for reminding me of it.

What's scary is that the VHS tape I have of it was made off of HBO when I lived at home before going away to college.

So we're talking probably summer of '86 or summer of '87.

Yikes.

Ducks would be cool! I have Tiggers, but they are very old. My fuzzy slippers I'm wearing toniht are just plaid, but very warm and comfy.

Hey you little bastards, get offa my lawn!

It's my lower-right-lip that's numb.

Eew, I had that one earlier this year - had to have nearly all my fillings redone over the last year, and when the numb the bottom, it takes out the bottom quadrant of your mouth, and does take a really long time (I think I was still feeling weird 4 hours later) to wear off.

It's a weird feeling, like that part of your face is some foreign thing. I couldn't help poking my lip, just to go "wow, that feels strange."
renniekins From: renniekins Date: November 16th, 2005 04:59 am (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, it was so annoying! For me the weirdest part was not being able to control it. I literally couldn't close it enough to eat or drink properly... crazy! Better now though. (:

Helloooooo out there!

Mea cupla. I guess I've fallen into the habit of reading without commenting. Not feeling like I have much to say right now.

Congrats on recapturing your slippers - kitties can be devious that way.

Re: Helloooooo out there!

It's okay: I didn't mean to make anybody feel guilty about not commenting! I was just concerned that I'd done something wrong, because I was using a client I don't use very often.

That said, it IS nice to know you're still out there reading. And singing! Even better.

It's always funny when kitties decide that something unusual is a cat toy. It's also confusing, trying to figure out where they've left it....

Your mention of annoyingness made me laugh. I'm not sure that the world itself is more annoying, but I'm sure there are more annoying people in it nowadays. :)

I dislike that numbness effect as well (though I don't otherwise mind dentists). Hopefully you won't have to try it yourself, but I've found that doing "lip exercisees" (i.e. wiggling my lips to the best of my ability) seems to speed up the de-numbing process. Plus it's fun!

I've heard all-y'all are fixin' ta git some snow today. Hope that didn't impede your ability to attend that meeting. (Never thought I'd say something like that. Hmf.)

"all-y'all"?? Yikes you're becoming a southerner. (:

We got some snow, but not until I'd arrived here. Good timing, that was! Although I was made fun of for wearing my sunglasses, since there was no sun. But I like to live in hope.... (plus, they're cool. heehee!)

That's why I don't take shots at the dentist. Pain is ignorable, not really that bad anyway, and only lasts for a few minutes, but numbness is irritating and lasts for hours. Plus I tend to bite myself, and that lasts even longer.
jennlk From: jennlk Date: November 17th, 2005 02:44 am (UTC) (Link)

Obviously someone who's *not* gotten a deep filling or deep drilling. Trust me, they can hurt like hell. Worst is the flinching, and the shots help with that.
johnridley From: johnridley Date: November 17th, 2005 10:18 am (UTC) (Link)
OK, sometimes it is worse. I did use shots when I was a kid and they pulled a tooth. True, most of my fillings lately have been very shallow, but I have had a couple of fillings that required many minutes of drilling and roughening.
I would certainly use the shots for some procedures, but not for anything lately.
renniekins From: renniekins Date: November 17th, 2005 03:25 am (UTC) (Link)
I've felt some pretty painful procedures in the past... also I'm very dental-phobic, so I take anything they'll give me to help me not be aware of what they're doing in there!

I was scolded for how tightly I was clasping my hands, because I was totally freaked out, even though I couldn't feel anything.
