Red Wings
Hey Wings fans! I know there are a few of you on my friends list.... Hopefully one of you will stumble over this entry. (:

Quick question for you: I have a couple of free Red Wings tickets for tomorrow night's 7pm game. They are from the Big Brother Big Sister people, and I'm taking my Little Sister. It should be neat!

I've never been to a game though. Any advice on what time I should get there, parking, etc? How long do games generally last?

It's been a while since I've been able to go to a game, & I never got to a preseason game. But you might want to leave at least an hour & 1/2 b/4 it starts. No telling about construction. I don't know how the crowds are for preseason games, but for regular games there are people lined up for parking. It isn't imperative that you get there on time, so don't worry about being real late. The Lions game should be over, & possibly the Tigers too. I don't think that should be too much of a problem traffic wise. You can park in cobo & walk thru the tunnels to JLA. Just look for the signs, or a line-up of cars on the Lodge waiting to get in.

The game lasts 3 or 4 hours.

Don't forget money. I don't remember, but Cobo may cost a few dollars, & if you want food/drinks I don't even know how much that costs any more.

Not much help here, but I tried. If anyone has better times, etc. feel free to jump in.

I'm not really a Wings fan, but I was a hockey fan back in college, and we went to the GLI a lot. I liked it best when we would go early and watch the warm up skating before the game. They generally let kids go down right by the ice to watch this, even if their tickets are in the nosebleed section. Depending on your level of nerve and/or cuteness, you can get autographs from team members at this time. I don't know if increased security has killed this or not. There is a 15 min delay between the end of practice and the beginning of the game so that they can Zamboni the ice, though, but it does give you a chance to go to the bathroom and stuff like that.

The best place to park is in the parking deck to the west of the map. Take the Lodge to the Jefferson Ave/JLA exit, and follow the crowd or signs.

You'll have a ton of fun!

rock on for the free tickets! everyone's given pretty much the same advice i'd give - allow yourself LOTS of extra time for construction, backups and other potential chaos. park in the JLA garage. i *think* it's $10 to park, but it's been nearly a year since i went to game, so it may have changed.

if you get there early enough, you can go down to the ice level and watch the warmup. sometimes the players will flip pucks to the kids when they're done, and you can get really cool pictures if you take your camera. warm up usually ends about 15-20 minutes before game time, so they can run the zamboni and other stuff.

each period is 20 minutes long and there are three. there will be a 15 minute intermission between 1 and 2, and 2 and 3. sometimes there are overtimes, but the rules changed last year so i can't tell you how long they might last - i'm SURE sherdeb can (:

after the game, you'll either want to wait for the crowd to dissipate or walk with the "herd" back to your car in the garage. that'll take time, and then it can take upwards of 40 min. to an hour to get out of the garage. that varies depending upon how many folks are there and how cooperative everyone's being with getting out in an orderly fashion.

another option: park elsewhere, like Greektown, and take the people mover to the game. it'll still take time and there'll still be crowds, but it can be fun.

have fun, lady! GO WINGS!

I seem to recall you have been to a Wings game.

Parking is abundant near the Joe, just get there early. That'll also give you time to walk about downtown with lil' sis for a while before the game. That's cool quality time.

Yup, you caught me in a white lie. (: I've never nagivated myself to a Wings game, and when I don't drive I often have no idea where I've ended up or how I got there. I pay more attention to the socialization then to the details of how to get somewhere. (but it was easier to just say I hadn't gone, then to explain all that! *grin*)
