Keep on Racing -- What a Con!!
I was hit by inspiration last month, with regard to ConFusion. I was thinking about how I could raise funds for Race For The Cure, a charity to support breast cancer awareness and research. (I try to come up with creative ways to raise money for this cause every year.)

I was talking about thoughts with a friend, then I mentioned an amusingly naughty but appropriate t-shirt I'd seen at last year's race, then it hit me.

Ribbons. I could sell I ♥ Boobs con ribbons!!!!!

Anybody who made a donation to the Race would get a ribbon! People at cons love ribbons, and people have loved boobs ever since womankind climbed to her feet and stopped dragging them around on the ground. These ones would be pretty darn cool/desirable.

My only mistake was in making just 100 of them. I wasn't sure how many people would buy, especially since I was asking for money..... I sold out saturday afternoon. It helped that my buddy John Scalzi announced my ribbons at opening ceremonies. I had people sneaking up waving dollar bills even before the ceremony finished!

Another cool thing is that at the end of the weekend, when I sadly had to tell people that the ribbons were gone, some of them asked "Can I donate anyway?" And then they did.

So here is what I must say: People at ConFusion are SO COOL! I loved doing this ribbon fundraiser. It was fun, made lots of people laugh, and raised a ton of money for the Race for the Cure. I am absolutely doing this again at Penguicon, only with more stock. Check out these totals!

 4 quarters .25 * 4 = 1.00
 1 loonie .97 * 1 = 0.97
 1 shiny dollar coin 1 * 1 = 1.00
69 single-dollar bills 1 * 69 = 69.00
 1 two-dollar bill 2 * 1 = 2.00
 3 bags of limes 2.99 * 3 = 8.97
 1 wooden plank 4.90 * 1 = 4.90
15 five-dollar bills 5 * 15 = 75.00
 1 ten-dollar bill 10 * 1 = 10.00
 9 twenty-dollar bills 20 * 9 = 180.00
 1 fifty-dollar bill 50 * 1 = 50.00
                                  -------------------
                                              $402.84

That is awesome!!

By the way why does | seem to suddenly (well, suddenly to me) mean a heart?
renniekins From: renniekins Date: January 22nd, 2008 03:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! Weird... must be a font thing. It looks like a heart on my screen. Good thing I included the photo, or you'd have been TOTALLY confused!
anderale From: anderale Date: January 22nd, 2008 03:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
oooohhhhh! Yes I would have been totally confused. I've seen it in other people's posts so you're probably right that it's a font thing. Thank goodness. I pipe boobs is just really odd!

The loonie is actually worth $1.03, so you got another 6 cents. Interesting fundraising idea.
kevinnickerson From: kevinnickerson Date: January 22nd, 2008 01:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
No, the loonie is back down per xe.com:

Which is what I got, look carefully one Canadian is $US 1.03! and that 6 cents more than what she listed.

I'm looking again, but it sure seems to say "1.00 CAD = 0.968682 USD"

I think you're looking at "1 USD = 1.03233 CAD".
renniekins From: renniekins Date: January 22nd, 2008 03:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm reading it like you; I looked it up last night and rounded. Those things can be hard to read, but I think we're right.
marsgov From: marsgov Date: January 22nd, 2008 12:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ahem. Yes. Well, not quite the ribbon I would wear, but I applaud your creativity.

After reading the money list (and especially the confusing "1 * 8 = 1"), I tried and failed to retrieve a copy of a recent news report: a bank robber who handed the teller a note asking for all the "tens, twenties, and thirties." The gentleman in question is now a guest of the state; perhaps on his return he will find a different line of work.

Must have been a "Pieces of Eight" received from a pirate.
Probably currency converts to a dollar.
marsgov From: marsgov Date: January 22nd, 2008 02:09 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ah, you claim it's supposed to read 8 * 1/8? That makes sense.

I actually use those nice shiny gold dollars on regular basis. They're issuing new ones every year and intend to issue one for each president. I can't *wait* to get a huge collection of Nixon dollars — it tickles my fancy to have such an untrustworthy twit on the dollar.

On the other hand, I refuse to touch the Jimmy Carter. And the Clinton would require a full hazmat suit...
From: tlatoani Date: January 22nd, 2008 04:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
And the George W. Bush ones, regardless of what they say on them, will be completely valueless.
marsgov From: marsgov Date: January 22nd, 2008 04:35 pm (UTC) (Link)
I heard that the Clinton dollar will have, on the obverse side, a kneeling woman.
From: tlatoani Date: January 22nd, 2008 04:40 pm (UTC) (Link)
I heard that the George W. Bush one will have, on the obverse side, a kneeling, naked prisoner with a hood on and a dog lunging at his genitals.
renniekins From: renniekins Date: January 22nd, 2008 03:49 pm (UTC) (Link)
Huh. I wrote that late at night, but I still don't know where the 8 came from!! Must be new math.
marsgov From: marsgov Date: January 22nd, 2008 04:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Good thing you don't work for a publicly-traded company. It's the kind of thing that could land you in the slammer in these post-SOX days! ("Local woman indicted on twelve counts of fraud in SEC investigation of ribbon scheme.")

Well I don't want official support or announcements or anything, and I'm not scheduling any events, so it won't be an Official Penguicon Thing. I'll just go with word-of-mouth, and people can come see me if they want one. It'll be just my private ribbons, and no other events. Does that sound okay?

I don't want to get in the way of the March of Dimes, and I definitely don't want to frustrate or annoy people! Just spread the love of boobs... *grin*

No no no, then she would be evil, like all those United Way executives and Greenpeace regional chairpeople that siphon off tons of money and buy themselves mansions. Rennie is much cooler than that, I don't think she's even taking money out of her donations to pay for getting the ribbons!

This is all about breast cancer awareness, see www.komen.org for a race in your area.

Yay! That's such a neat idea, I wish I had it! I thought that t-shirt was really cool at the race, but the ribbon is even cooler! Plus the ribbon looks really great... it is actually a proper race for the cure pink, isn't it?
renniekins From: renniekins Date: January 24th, 2008 04:18 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's pink with black letters. I think it's a bit lighter than "proper", but the general idea is definitely there.

Were you planning on doing this at Penguicon?

Cause I'm going to be there like... forever and would love to do this for you/the cause.
renniekins From: renniekins Date: January 24th, 2008 04:29 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm definitely ordering some, and I expect to be there to hand them out myself. If I can't make it for some reason, that'd be great if you could fill in!

I do the Race for the Cure every year, that's where the money I raise is going. Never tried the 3-day -- I like it in concept, but I worry that too much of the fundraising goes to the event itself, not the charity -- though I haven't done much research on it.

Wow...it's amazing and sad how many people have been affected by this. I lost a close college friend, and my mom is a survivor. I'll have ribbons at Penguicon!!! *hug*
djinnthespazz From: djinnthespazz Date: January 25th, 2008 03:14 am (UTC) (Link)
I managed to lose my ribbons, including 'boobs,' 'honorary australian,' and my 'GoH' ribbon.

Boo hoo.

Glad your ribbon drive did so well, and that I was able to contribute!
Go Cure!!!
