American Waffles
They went out for sunday brunch buffet. They were just starting "Round Two: The Syrup Round". She was preparing her waffle as they chatted.

She was rambling away about something mundane when she noticed that the other side of the table had grown silent, and her conversation one-sided. She glanced up.

He was staring at her plate, shaking in silent mirth. She looked down at her hands then grinned with embarrassment. She was holding a little pat of butter in her left hand and a knife in her right hand. Without thinking about it, as she had been speaking, she had methodically been using the knife to carefully extract a tiny dab of butter to be placed individually in each hole of the waffle.

She shrugged helplessly. "Um. They taste best, you see, when each hole has the appropriate ratio of butter and syrup...."

"You're wonderfully quirky, you know that?"

"Well, yes. And neurotic also; I hope you like that. But here, taste this." And she cut him a bite, ignoring his protests that his french toast was sufficient, thank you very much.

He sighed, picked up the piece of waffle, and chewed meditatively. She raised her eyebrows encouragingly. "See? See?"

Solemnly, he nodded. "Best waffle bite ever."

I like those moments where it's OK to be as neurotic as you want, and the other person just appreciates it as part of who you are. :-)

Is there some other way you're supposed to eat waffles? :)

How did it compare to last week's Belgian Waffles?

Quite different, but still very tasty in its own right.

Sometime recently I read a whole thread on a bulletin board somewhere about how people liked to eat their waffles, and damned if I can find it now! Bummer.

You are not alone in the quest for butter in every dimple.

And just like when I read that, I now want waffles.

Darn, sounds entertaining! Yeah the power of suggestion... that happens to me all the time too. Especially with waffles. Yum.

(a) Delightful.
(b) Where was brunch?
(c) Was it good enough that you want to go back soon?

We like to know where the good Sunday Brunches are.

Nothing fancy, it was my guilty pleasure: the Big Boy weekend brunch.

However if you're looking for fancy, Boodles has a very nice one. I've only gone once, but I've always meant to return some day... more of a special(ish) occasion place though I think.

The Beverly hills grill is also awesome if people are looking for fancy bunch.

For a while, that was our guilty pleasure every Sunday. Did you go to the John R one?

Boodles ... hmmm ... SEMGS should do a Sunday brunch.

There is more than one Boodles? I've gone to the one on 11 Mile, just on the other side of I75 - nice walk from my house.

Semgs, or maybe we should just organize a friends boodles brunch. Could be fun!

Sorry, I meant "was it the Big Boy on John R?" As far as I know, there's just the one Boodles.

This conversation reminds me of my conversations with Jim, and our sense of humor regarding each other's quirks.

*grin*

And Jim adores waffles too :-)
