Sore Mouth
I was a good girl this morning and -- despite a dental-phobia strong enough to make me sick to my stomach while driving -- went to the dentist first thing. I now have a big jar of antibiotics and an even bigger jar of nasty medicated mouth rinse.

This afternoon I was feeling a bit hungry, and I decided a dill pickle would hit the spot. I have two jars of pickles -- I opened up the first one and bit into a pickle. It tasted like cucumber in water. It's a very old jar, so I figured its "dillness" must have worn out, although I didn't know dill could do that. So I tossed it away and opened up my newer jar. I took a bite and it also tasted like water! That's when I realized that this mouthwash is so nasty and changes my taste buds so drastically that sour dill pickles taste like water. Weird!

Anyway I'm hopeful that the antibiotics will quickly have me feeling back to normal. That would be a good thing, because right now all I want to do is sleeeeeep, and I really need to do my taxes instead.

Careful With That Mouthwash...

My dentist gave me a bottle of nuclear-powered mouthrinse a while back. Chlorhexidine Gluconate. She told me to use it no more than once a week. Using it any more often than that would Destroy My Tastebuds Permanently! AIEEE!!

I get too much pleasure from food to want to mess with my tastebuds, so I don't use it anymore. Be careful with it if you have that same kind of mouthwash.

Re: Careful With That Mouthwash...

Oh crap... that is exactly what I have, and my dentist instructed me to use it three times a day and after I eat.

I cleverly calculated that I eat three times a day and therefore do not need to use it more than that, but this still equals way more than once a week! Hopefully mine is a different strength than yours or something, because I'd hate to mess up my tastebuds permanently.... ):

Re: Careful With That Mouthwash...

It says 0.12% on the bottle.

Maybe my dentist was totally wrong about the tastebud thing, but who knows...

Re: Careful With That Mouthwash...

No, that stuff IS very strong indeed, it has to be in order to do its job. But my sense of taste recovered after a few days. It was worth going through The Blandness to zap the gum-zit! Damn, I've never HAD anything that painful and gross in my mouth before. It retreated within hours, though.

Re: Careful With That Mouthwash...

When in doubt, ask your doctor/pharmicist, but don't discontinue...

Re: Careful With That Mouthwash...

Yeah, I'll keep using it. Maybe not the whole 2 weeks, but at least until the ick is gone. After all I'm using it as prescribed. Hopefully it will even help!

Re: Careful With That Mouthwash...

The other Classic Mistake is to discontinue an antibiotic after you start feeling better. That gives the germs a chance to regroup and improve via natural selection...

I recall taking a nasty set of antibiotics a few years back; I forget what for. At the end my hands would shake every time I took a dose — my subconcious telling me that the meds were going to make me nauseous.

Illness also affects your tastebuds directly. Recently I tasted a wine when had a cold; all I got was vinegar...

Glad you went -- and glad it's being taken care of.
