I Was Wrong
My boyfriend, the Fierce Hunter, actually caught a deer yesterday! I have to confess I didn't think it would happen. After all he never has in the past. But he has proved me wrong, and I have to take back all of my dubious predictions. Yay, I'm happy for him!

Somebody once, a long time ago, was shocked when I confessed to having been wrong about something. "Wait, what did you say? You never admit to being wrong."

"That's not true, I always admit when I'm wrong. It's just that it happens so rarely, you're not used to it...."

Well no, he kept it. In fact at this very moment it is bundled up in the back of his car heading south. But I'm afraid it's deceased....

He's taking it somewhere to be processed, then I believe he plans on eating/freezing the meat. I don't know if these plans are negotiable...

That's great! Can he build on his success, and kill some local forest rats when he gets home?

While I'm sure he'd be happy to, I'm not sure you're actually allowed to....?

Details, details!

(I think you are allowed to, but only if you can get far enough away from houses, and only if the land owners allow you. Which is more and more difficult every year, with the sprawl. There are a LOT of deer around here, though, since there are so few hunters. If he can find a place to hunt, locally, he would probably have good odds.)

Squirrels? Far as I know squirrels are game. Might be a specific season for them, though.

They are really good pan fried with a bit o butter. Yummm.

Man, it's been ages since I've had squirrel.

He caught a deer?

That should read more.. "he caught a deer.. ?"

I imagined a man "fishing" for deer or netting one.. rather than gunning one down.

I sincerely hope that he uses every scrap of that animal.

I don't know of any hunters who use the hooves, but if you go through a processor they generally have hide buyers, and though I don't hunt, I'm always happy to help friends & neighbors consume excess venison.

I have always thought that there should be a knife/spear/pointy stick season and a wrestling season for deer, if they're going to have muzzle loader and bow season, why not?

Sorry about the anonymous.

Actually I think I remember someone taking a deer with an atlatl a few years ago. I might actually like that. It'd take a couple of years to get good enough at it to try, I'd guess.

Neat, I've learned a new word!
johnridley From: johnridley Date: November 18th, 2008 11:30 am (UTC) (Link)
...and you won't find very many words that are more fun to say. Now to figure out a way to bring it up in conversation...

I've seen hooves used as hat racks, bones associated with the area as handles, they can be used to make rattles or even as stamps to make deer tracks with. My point being, while I'm not all that against hunting, I do think -every- effort needs to be made to use every part of every animal killed -- call me crazy.

Why? Do you expect that to be done with the cows or pigs that we eat?

I'm just curious. I don't agree with hunting for sport or trophies, but as long as the meat feeds people, that seems sufficient to me.

Yes, I expect/hope it's done with cows/pigs/chickens that are slaughtered for food.

I just believe we need to respect nature as much as we can and if we're to kill something, we need to make as much use of it as possible. I understand this can't -always- be done, but it's something I like to see.

Just eating the meat is sufficient, I guess -- but I still hope more than just the meat can get used. Many farms go to really huge lengths to use parts of the animals they don't end up selling, so that they can get the most out of it, which I think is good. :)

Heehee. I prefer talking about him trying to "catch" a deer rather than using more appropriate but violent verbs, like shoot/hunt/kill.... It amuses me for some reason.

He (and his friends) will definitely be enjoying the meat all winter!
