Octopus
I was at a restaurant the other day, and noticed an appetizer: Charred Baby Octopus. "You know," I realized, "That doesn't sound like food. It sounds like a tragedy. Something you'd see on the news. 'Oh no, look at the charred baby octopus!'"

I don't know why for sure, but I'm guessing it's the use of the word "baby". Makes it seem too anthropomorphized. Sounds a bit like clubbing baby seals, charring baby octopuses....

It may have been delicious, but I couldn't order it. Poor charred baby octopus!

Yeah, for being on a menu that does sound rather off-putting.

Oh gosh! I couldn't have ordered that either. I think octopi are awesome though. I would feel guilty eating something that smart.

Everything is smart. Even plants. Mushrooms. Microbes.

Mushrooms don't sneak up onto fishing boats, break into the holds to steal fish, and get away cleanly.

Precisely! I think it would be more frightening if a mushroom did do that, though.

Baby was definitely a poor choice of words, although they probably meant it to indicate that the meat was fresh and tender vs old and stringy/rubbery.

Heh. I've had something like this dish at a restaurant and I went into one of my game characters. It just looked like something one of Zelazny's Chaosians might eat.

And it was very good. And very baby. little intact octopi.
