Birthday Bleed
It's been my habit for awhile now to donate blood on or near my birthday. I think it's a nice little tradition -- what better way to celebrate surviving another year, than to help others to do so also? Happily my office building was kind enough to hold a blood drive today (just a week past my birthday), so I didn't have to go out of my way to make it happen.

Everything went great! For some reason the last time I tried to give blood, I dried up over halfway through. That's particularly irritating, because they can't use a partially-filled bag of blood. However I lost close to a pint of blood.... so it meant I got all the discomfort of giving blood without anybody benefiting from it. I was so bummed. (However I did learn why they have to discard partially-filled bags: they put anti-coagulants in each bag, the right amount for a pint. If for some reason you can't fill the bag, the percentages will be off so it's useless.)

Anyway I'm told that dehydration is the likely cause of this happening. I had felt just fine last time, normal and hydrated, but this time I made certain to drink plenty of extra water yesterday and today. It must have worked, because today was a piece of cake. Quick and easy... just the way it's supposed to be.

Yay me! A very satisfying way to conclude my birth week celebration.
