Cookie warnings
I got a little bag of cookies today with lunch (ack! what happened to my diet?!). I was for some reason glancing over the ingredients, and noticed the following warning:

MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF TREE NUTS.

What the heck is a tree nut? Is it anything like a tree squirrel? And why do I picture it like a peanut-guy, perched in the crook of a tree, wearing a propeller beanie?

By the way, I'll bet you're eating Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies. I ate a bag of those on Friday and I remember seeing that note on the back of the bag.

Re: one definition...

WOW!! She lived in a tree for 2 years?! That is quite the undertaking. Here I thought I liked trees, but you're right: she is truly a tree nut.

...hope it wasn't traces of her in my cookies....

Re: one definition...

Haha...

Two years is just incredible. I have to admire her spirit, at the least. I meant "nut" in a good way. :)

Re: one definition...

Oh yeah. Sounds a little crazy, but it's hard not to approve of that kind of raw passion.

The real reason they call them "tree nuts" is to defferentiate them from "peanuts" plus that's how they're referred to by the USDA and the FDA.

Re:

But you still haven't asked the original question: what is the mysterious "them" to which you refer? What is a tree nut?
encorecrazay From: encorecrazay Date: July 15th, 2002 03:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ok, the primary types of tree nuts are: almonds, pistachios, filberts and walnuts, i.e., nuts that are harvested from trees.

Ahh. So peanuts are harvested from....peas?

Re:

Acutally peanuts come from a low-branching widely cultivated leguminous annual herb (Arachis hypogaea).

tree nuts

walnuts, Brazil nuts...the list goes on. And a fair number of people are deathly allergic to the whole bunch of 'em. Hence, the warning.

Re: tree nuts

But peanuts don't fall into the same category, I take it? Confusing. I know about nut allergies and how dangerous they can be, but I didn't know they differentiated between *types* of nuts. (Since I don't really care for any kind of nut, I've never learned much about 'em...)

Re: tree nuts

Right, peanuts are legumes, like peas and beans. So technically, they're not nuts at all.

Though oddly enough, both cashews and peanuts give my husband migraines, even though cashews are tree nuts. Other nuts don't seem to bother him.
