Book-freeing
Making an entry here so I won't forget! This sounds very very cool, and I'm going to have to spend some time reading through the website and giving it a try, sometime very soon.

http://www.bookcrossing.com/

Check it out! I haven't had time to read much yet, but doesn't it look neat?

Ooh

That does look nifty! I have lots of books that I could 'release', hehe.

Interesting... I went looking for books that were reportedly found, and couldn't find a single one, except when a person gave the book to his sister. I searched by author for Margaret Atwood, and the most comments was 3, all by the same person. It looked rather awful to me, I was reading about all these books released at the Detroit Metro airport, and I know that they are picked up by illiterate cleaning personnel who then throw them in the trash.

Many public libraries and some used bookstores have a free/cheap trade shelf, and almost all public libraries will accept used books for their book sale. The Dearborn Public Library book sale will start again in October, every other Wednesday, and charges 50 cents for paperbacks, a dollar for hardcovers, and a nickel or a quarter for magazines, I forget which... so that seems like a much nicer place to set a book free, to me, so that someone will actually value it.

About the same here

I looked in Austin, only one book had been left and one place, no comments about anyone having picked and read any of them. And the Austin Public Library sale is also in October and the Austin Literacy Council's was just last month.

I think it works best for the people who just list their books and get other people to ask for them, then they can hand them off or mail books to each other. The person with the most successful handoffs (61) has never set a book free, but listed over a thousand books.

that looks so cool, but I don't know if I could give up my books! I wanna keep them close to me so I can reread them :)

I want a website that will remind me who I loaned my Collected Strangers in Paradise, Volume 1 to, so I can loan it to Rennie! Neither of these trading websites have a copy of it.
guingel From: guingel Date: July 19th, 2002 02:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
oooh! I hope you can find it--everyone should read Strangers in Paradise!
cannibal From: cannibal Date: July 19th, 2002 10:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
I concur, I keep thinking of it whenever I see your user icons. Maybe I should just buy another copy, and some of the later ones, too. There must be somewhere one can find cheap used comic books....
guingel From: guingel Date: July 20th, 2002 06:54 am (UTC) (Link)
yeah, buy another copy. then if you find the first one you can always give it as a gift to someone :)
I have a lot of catching up to do as well. I just got the most recent one and I am so confused. But at the same time I'm very glad that I still have plenty left to read.
I don't know about cheap used comics (what with me not living anywhere near you) but you can order SiP from the website. (just in case you hadn't been there or something)
cannibal From: cannibal Date: July 22nd, 2002 07:55 am (UTC) (Link)
Grin, yes, I've been there, it's a very nice website. My feelings are mixed: they're very expensive, but I do want to support the artist.
guingel From: guingel Date: July 22nd, 2002 08:45 am (UTC) (Link)
yeah, same here. I want to order some, but my dad keep saying he'll find them somewhere for less, and not doing so. >.< So it's going to be a while before I can get all the comics I'm missing, but ah well.

I don't know, Howard gave me a line on a used comic store a friend of his runs, maybe we'll dig up a friend of mine that used to run one. SIP may be too trendy to actually show up and be reasonable, but I'll check and tell you if I can. We may just have to give up and pay cover price.

hmm. well, good luck. I've been having difficulty finding SiP in the usual comic book stores we go to. They might have back issues or the latest one (rarely) but they never have the collections; except for one very large two-story one in the middle of Manhattan. (Midtown Comics--one of my favorite places to go in the city)

Woo-hoo! Amazon used books has a few of them for 5 bucks!

Borders didn't (tho they offered to order it) but the little comic store by my house has collections, that's where I bought mine. I bet if I wanted to buy all the collections I could convince some little mom-n-pop comic store to order them for me and give me a discount... Amazon offers no discount, and buy.com only has "My Subtle Shift from Baptist Fundamentalist to Unitarian Universalist: Sermons of a Newly Liberated Ministry" which I think is probably by a different Terry Moore!

wow! 5 dollars? that's really good! I'll have to check that out. At the moment I'm using the "look inside" option at amazon to get sneak previews of the books. Well, of Sanctuary. Whoa.

yeah. . . probably not the same guy. lol.

anyway, I hope you can find them for a good price.

Wow, "look inside" is nifty!
guingel From: guingel Date: July 22nd, 2002 02:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
::nodnod:: but now I'm even more anxious to get a hold of Sanctuary!
cannibal From: cannibal Date: July 22nd, 2002 07:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, I ordered the first three collections, and am looking fwd to receiving them now.
guingel From: guingel Date: July 22nd, 2002 08:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
very cool. "It's a Good Life" is one of my favorites, and so is "Love Me Tender" (but that's number 4). I like the ones that are focused on them and how they interact, as opposed to being focused on Darcy and the Parker Girls.
cannibal From: cannibal Date: July 23rd, 2002 10:15 am (UTC) (Link)
I've never really read anything about Darcy, though I've heard people talking about her, remember I've only read Volume 1 so far. I like David a lot, although in Katchoo's place, I'd probably date both of them.

Oh, I also found that your dad can preorder it used through Amazon, tell it how much he's willing to pay and what condition you're willing to accept, and it'll hold the order open and look for it automatically as long as 12 weeks.
guingel From: guingel Date: July 23rd, 2002 07:27 pm (UTC) (Link)
ahh, yes. that's right. Well, Darcy is an interesting character. David. . . jeez. He's a sweet kid, but I can't forgive him for getting in between Francine and Katchoo (although I admit poor Francie has a lot to do with that herself.)
I've been hoping for a threesome, David and Francine have hinted that they like each other ("She's beautiful!") but my friend said that something has happened to prevent that, and the comic I got is unclear on a lot of things but it hinted that something has happened to David.
But also, there's the whole romantic/poet thingie. I've just recently discovered that I'm no longer a romantic. Ah well. So David can tend to annoy me a bit. Sometimes I think he's adorable and sometimes it's like. . . >.< I hate the love at first sight thing with Katchoo (this is explained later, but he sees Katchoo when she's drunk and decides that she's beautiful and the woman he'll marry. she's drunk, so she's not behaving as herself, and he's basing it on looks at any rate. that annoys me).

anyway. I'll quit whining. I'm sorry--I think I've included spoilers in here :-/
I'll have to check out the preorder thing. sounds good.
cannibal From: cannibal Date: July 23rd, 2002 10:25 pm (UTC) (Link)
Um, David seems to be behaving with restraint and honor... but I think I need to reread before I can talk about this meaningfully!

Is it possible that I'm still a romantic?
renniekins From: renniekins Date: July 24th, 2002 07:10 am (UTC) (Link)
You?? Nah..... *grin*
guingel From: guingel Date: July 24th, 2002 08:51 am (UTC) (Link)
nah, he's nice and sweet and a good kid, and he behaved well. . . he just. . . annoys me. lol. I think I may be jealous of him on Francine's behalf. I tend to do that a lot ;)

That site had a link to http://www.sf-books.com/ which is a book-trade service, and the top 3 most wanted books are all by Terry Pratchett.
