Ash Wednesday - cellophane — LiveJournal
the story of an invisible girl
Ash Wednesday
Well, yesterday was Mardi Gras. I had a good day! I enjoyed a Paczki at work yesterday (well, most of one...those things are filling!), then C and I went out for a Cajun dinner last night. It was very yummy, and we both got some strings of beads and masks. The restaurant had a magician and a band. We didn't dance or anything, but we ate plenty of Cajun seafood, I drank a Hurricane, and we had fun.

So now Lent begins. Like last year, I'm going to try to give up things which are bad for me anyway, and take on a healthy habit.

Actually, my Lenten Resolutions are very similar to last year, though not identical. Here they are:

I'm giving up the elevator in my office building.
Okay, that one's identical to last year. But I think it's a really good one. I work on the 4th floor, so there's no reason I can't take the stairs every time. But I get lazy, especially first thing in the morning, and more and more frequently I find myself just hopping on that elevator. So no more, until Easter!

I'm giving up eating candy in Michigan.
This one's a little more sneaky. The thing is, I have a gigantic sweet tooth. In fact, I suspect that all of my teeth are sweet. I've been giving into more and more candy cravings of late, and it's got to stop. I really want to give up candy for Lent, but I don't want to give it up this weekend when we go to nationals (leaving tonight). There will be snacks on the bus, treats in the hotel, and the usual sugar-rush competition day. So basically I'm giving up candy except for this weekend, when I'll be traveling. Hence, no eating candy while here in Michigan. (For the record, baked goods are allowed, just no candy.)

I'm giving up not exercising every day.
Once again, this is much like last year. Except I'm getting rid of those toe-touches, because I never liked them: they always just made my back hurt. Instead, the routine I did this morning was:
  • 100 jumping jacks
  • 100 stomach crunches
  • 20 push-ups
  • 30 leg lifts (lying on each side)

So that's it...hopefully I'll successfully stick to all of these resolutions! I think I can do it, so long as I don't accidentally forget....

Excellent! Except that consuming an entire bag of hershey kisses is more my style. I might just need to ask for your address, sometime before Easter!

Good luck. Here's hoping you're as successful as last year. :)

Hrm... I wonder if I should give up caffeine again. I haven't had any yet today.

I know I'll REALLY want a sweet tea at lunch, though.

Thanks, me too!

You could always do a partial...like giving up coffee and/or coke, but not tea. Like the way I've given up candy but not baked goods....

Go for it...it's a good feeling!

I enjoyed a Paczki at work yesterday

Ah the poonch-key! A detroit-area delicacy if I recall. Pick some up in Hamtramck?

Yes indeedy! Although it's weird...it used to be a very ethnic thing, and fairly hard to find, but it's now wide-spread (at least in Detroit). Now everybody makes them. I've even seen paczkis in Dunkin Donuts!!! Sheesh. Not "real" ones, of course. Somebody in my office picked them up from a bakery in the suburbs...not Hamtramck...I don't think they were 100% traditional, but they were still good, and quite close.

I once thought it would be a good idea in college to not use the elevator. I figured, heck, if I could make it up to the 11th floor every day toting books and wearing a giant winter parka, I was sure to stay in shape.

Eventually, I agreed with everyone else: I was flat out nuts.

The 11th floor! Yikes! How long did that last?

A few years ago I worked on the 11th floor, and another girl and I would occasionally take the stairs down-and-up in the afternoon, generally just once, as a little exercise break. But we used the elevator the rest of the time.

No paczkis in Austin.

Re: paczkis

Really? I'm surprised there isn't a Polish bakery somewhere that has 'em....
