the story of an invisible girl
Not just for breakfast anymore
Yesterday it was dreadfully hot in the office. Something has been wrong with our air conditioning all week actually, and the temperature has been in the high-70's in here.

Afternoon came, and I was feeling hot, thirsty, and grumpy. I decided that what I really needed was some ice cream to make me feel better. In my opinion, ice cream is the great cure-all. It makes me happy; it makes me feel better....almost any problem can be eased with ice cream.

I went down to the building's little deli, and looked into their freezer. Empty. The deli's ownership changed, just a few months ago, and it occurred to me that I hadn't seen any ice cream since that switch! Just an empty freezer, day after day.

So I asked the guy: are you ever going to have ice cream? His response, "In a week or two. I know it's starting to get warm outside, but it's still winter...."

Still winter?! He won't sell me ice cream because it's still winter!!?? I told him, "I like to eat ice cream year round." He looked surprised by that fact. Perhaps this is what we get for having the store run by a man? Or is it just him? I don't know. I mean sure, I don't eat it outdoors when there's snow on the ground, but he doesn't think people eat ice cream inside when it's cold out? Weird.

I thought afterwards I should have asked him, "Are you still going to be serving coffee in the summertime?" Maybe then it would have made more sense to him.

So anyway, I am led to a poll, to see if I'm the only ice cream one who feels this way. Take my poll. Forward it to your friends. Let's solve this ice cream issue once and for all! (Oh and for what it's worth: I had ice cream for breakfast this morning. Yum!)

Poll #115307 Ice Cream

Do you eat ice cream in the winter?

Of course!
Some, but not as much as summer.
No, only in the summer time.
I don't eat ice cream.

Do you eat ice cream for breakfast?

Of course!
Yes but with shame, behind closed doors.
No, don't be ridiculous.

Do you drink coffee in the summertime?

Of course!
Only in an air-conditioned environment.
Only if I can't stay awake.
Heck no!

Please choose from the following:

Ice cream
Ice cream IN coffee!
None of the above

What is your favorite kind/flavor of ice cream?

How often do you eat ice cream?

A few times a day.
A few times a week.
A few times a month.
A few times a year.
A few times in my life.
I can't eat ice cream, but I wish I could.
I don't like ice cream.
Only when it's dreadfully hot out.
Only when I'm dreadfully cold.

Finally...does gender influence ice cream preferences?

I am a man and I like ice cream MORE than most women I know.
I am a man and I like ice cream LESS than most women I know.
I am a man and I like ice cream ABOUT THE SAME as most women I know.
I am a woman and I like ice cream MORE than most men I know.
I am a woman and I like ice cream LESS than most men I know.
I am a woman and I like ice cream ABOUT THE SAME as most men I know.

Your last question threw me a bit. At first I thought my answer was "yes, I prefer women to ice cream". ;)

On the flip side, I never, ever drink coffee, so that question was misleading or incomplete.

Re: funny

Ha! Whoops, didn't think of that interpretation of the last question... (:

Yeah, I realized as I was looking at the post that I'd forgotten to add an "I don't drink coffee" option. Unfortunately you can't edit polls once they're created. Ah well...

wow! that was thorough! i'm afraid i'm going to skew the gender question, though, with my goofy stomach. (i'm a woman, but my body can't handle fat and sugar, so that makes ice cream less enjoyable for me. *stomps angrily*) but i did want to say, i think i ONLY eat ice cream in the winter. i love fatty foods and comfort foods when it's cold out! in the summer, though, i prefer something more refreshing than ice cream, like an ice tea or a snow-cone. so tell THAT to your deli guy! :D

That's so sad for you. hm, good point...when it's REALLY hot out, I want something less milky also -- sorbet or gelato or something. Hadn't thought about that!

I too am not a coffee drinker, so I didn't answer that one.

And you're missing an answer in "Please choose among the following" - I like coffee _in_ ice cream, but not the other way around (my favorite ice cream is B&J's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch, in fact).

Silly store owner!

They used to call it Coffee Toffee Crunch.

haha! Take a look at the answers to that favorite flavor question...I listed the exact same one! I guess we're ice cream sisters or something. In fact, that's what I enjoyed this very morning...yummy.

Re: They used to call it Coffee Toffee Crunch.

I don't think B&J ever called it Coffee Toffee Crunch - or if they did it was a _long_ time ago. It's been my favorite ice cream for at least 5 years, and it's listed that way in their cookbook too. I think Hagen-Daas has a Coffee Toffee Crunch, though - although it's not as good...

Yay for ice cream sisters! Do you find that you eat more of it than you really want to, because of the pursuit of just one more piece of crunchy chocolate bar? It's my downfall...

Re: They used to call it Coffee Toffee Crunch.

hmmm, perhaps I did mix them up. It's been awhile....I remember I liked it very much, and then for ages I couldn't find it (just the vanilla heath one) at all. When I started finding it again, I thought perhaps they'd renamed it. I still don't find it often, so it's a treat when I do.

Oh yes, I have that exact problem too!

My thoughts exactly...I don't drink coffee, but I was /raised/ on coffee ice cream...and coffee milk! What's coffee milk, you ask? No less than the state drink of Rhode Island! It's regular milk, with Eclipse coffee syrup added. Never heard of it? Then your mother must not be from New England. Mine is, and we'd order the syrup by the case, to put in milk, milkshakes, or over ice cream. Absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, I don't think you can find it outside of the Rhode Island area. Although, I've found a few places where you can buy it over the web, and am seriously tempted.

Wow, that does sound really yummy!

I only said 'heck no' to drinking coffee in the summertime because I answer 'Heck no' to all coffee-drinking questions. I don't drink the stuff in January either. Tea, all the way. So perhaps I should have said yes, because I do drink hot tea in the summer, just not as often as I do in the winter.

Um. Yeah.

heehee, you made me laugh! I know the coffee question is all misworded. I'm just going to have to discard those results, since they're "not statistically significant". Ah well....it's still fun reading what everybody thinks.

I rarely (probably can count on hands how many) drink coffee...
but icecream-

love, even though too much does give me sinus trouble...allergic to dairy products... :-(
but it is oh so good!!!

but for breakfast?!??!?! you're just plain weird.... ;-)
renniekins From: renniekins Date: March 21st, 2003 12:49 pm (UTC) (Link)

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!! How sad that you're allergic....

I don't think that eating ice cream for breakfast is really any different from eating a sweetened cereal for breakfast. It's cold, sweet, dairy. Same thing!

But then, I eat cereal for dinner sometimes too. I guess I'm just a non-conforming eater. *grin*
retepsnave From: retepsnave Date: March 21st, 2003 12:57 pm (UTC) (Link)

Interesting parallels....

actually, eating ice cream is only one of many things I do that I should not...
but while I see the merit in your analogy between ice cream and cereal for breakfast... I eat neither sweetened cereal or ice cream that early in the morning... so perhaps both seem equally bizzar (granola for me... friends called me granola pete or a bark-eater for years... ;-)
but it was better eating that than greasy MacKiller fries.... ;-)

but Yes, I do see the similarities-
renniekins From: renniekins Date: March 21st, 2003 02:18 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: Interesting parallels....

Yeah, I also do many things that I should not...I know how that can be!

I like granola okay, but not when it's full of nuts. I don't like nuts! Hm, it's good on ice cream....
retepsnave From: retepsnave Date: March 24th, 2003 04:50 am (UTC) (Link)

Re: Interesting parallels....

lol..... Ice cream and yogert too... both of which I have dispite knowing that I should not...
so true about our inate sense of self-distructive behaviour.... ;-)
