The Hip-hop of the Un-hip

I am currently taking a hip hop dance class. It's a lot of fun. The dancing is cool and funky; I feel like I'm on MTV. Even though I'm not great at it (and feel dreadfully white doing it), I still enjoy the high-energy style.

The instructor is an amazingly good dancer. He's way more cool and hip than I can ever hope to be. The class is full of girls. He'll tell us, "You need to look mean! You are not butterflies, that was the last class!" (A ballet class is right before ours.) We put on mean-angry faces, then start giggling.

We've been learning a dance to a specific piece of music. The piece is not my "style" of music at all, basically rap, but it's got a good driving beat and it's fun to move to. Because I've been having trouble remembering the steps, I wanted to try to download the music from somewhere and practice at home. So I asked the instructor what the music was from.

"It's Jaysey," he told me. I gave him a blank look. "You know, Jayzey," he failed to clarify.

"Okay, um, is that the name of the song, or the group?" I asked blankly.

"Jayzee, it's a guy. You know, JayZee! Blueprint. You've heard of him. He did [insert name of presumably popular song I'm not familiar with here]." He started to rap/hum part of it.

I shook my head, a little embarrassed. "No...I'm really old you see... So is it just the letters J-Z, or spelled out Jay Zee...? I want to try to download it."

"It's spelled Jay Z. J-A-Y, some space, then a Z. Blueprint," he explained patiently. "You'll find it; it's everywhere; it's very popular."

I carefully recorded in my Palm Pilot "Jay Z - Blue-something."

The next night, on my computer, I tried to find it. I'd thought he meant that Blue-whatever was the name of the song, but I quickly discovered that Jay-Z had done an album called Blueprint. Now of course I didn't know which track it was, so I started downloading (via Limewire) random songs with the word "blue" in them.

I couldn't find the darn thing, and started getting tired and irritable. All of the songs were starting to sound the same to me, so I wasn't sure I'd even recognize it anymore. Why hadn't he told me the darn name of the song?!

Finally I started doing web searches, hoping to magically figure out what it was that way. After awhile, I found a site which had clips from every song on Blueprint, complete with titles -- hooray! I had to listen to every clip before I decided my song had to be Jigga That N***a.

Ah-ha, now I understood why he hadn't told me the name of the song. At least, once I downloaded it, I recognized it immediately. I knew I had the right song, so I could practice my dance as much as I wanted.

If only I could remember the steps.....
