Well, today during my lunch break I dusted off my figure skates and hit the ice with them. Then I put them on, laced them up, and went skating. Ha! I'm hilarious, I know.

It felt weird. I haven't used them since the national championships, back in March. I've been speedskating once a week (more-or-less), but not figure skating. I have speed skates, which are shaped very differently than figure skates. I definitely could tell I wasn't used to them anymore! My balance felt a bit off, and the darn blades were way too short.

Fortunately, it came back very quickly of course. I've been doing this sport for too long for a couple of months to really make much of a difference. I practiced the various edges, turns, and jumps that I thought were likely to be asked of us at tryouts. I don't feel like I'm at the height of my skill by any means, but at least I know how these skates feel on the ice again. I feel competent and familiar, which is good enough.

Yes, it seems I've decided to try out for synchro again this year. This doesn't necessarily mean I'll actually skate the season -- I can still decline a position on the team if I want. I don't know yet if I'll do that or not...but at least this way I can choose either way. This postpones my decision for a bit. This gives me the chance to see who's on the team and what the coach has planned for this year. Also, it gives me a chance to see everybody and skate with them a bit.

Who knows...maybe just going to tryouts will help get me psyched about skating this year! And if not, well, there is nothing that says I have to skate.
