Dark Humor

I went to speedskating practice yesterday. One of the guys commented to me: I spent all day today watching the war. When I left to come here, I asked my wife, "Can you tape the war for me?"

We all chuckled at that. Then somebody said she thought it was kind of awful, that we were laughing about war. I said, But that's what humor is all about: making light of terrible situations.

It's the only thing that makes them more manageable, after all. The ability to smile in the face of tragedy. Because life is full of tragedy, and if you don't spend time laughing and loving even so, you will be overwhelmed by it all.
