A Brother Story

I was having a particularly painful and difficult time, a few years ago, grieving from a very personal loss. I talked to my brother on the phone, telling him some of my anguish. We have a close relationship...he lived about a 5-hour drive away though, so all we could share was words.

The next evening I came home late from work and, there on my porch in front of my door, was a paper plate covered in tinfoil. I removed the tinfoil to find a plate of chocolate chip cookies. Homemade.

On top of the cookies was a handwritten note. It said (approximately), "Your brother knows you are going through a rough time and wanted to bake you some cookies. Alas, he is in Chicago and cannot. I am your brother's friend, so I have made you cookies in his place."

The friend of my brother's was somebody I had never met, but he lived nearby. The kindness and thoughtfulness of both of those young men made me cry, but this time the pain was mixed with love and gratitude....
