San Diego Zoo

M is in San Diego for a conference, and I flew out thursday to join him for a long weekend getaway. It's lovely here, and we're having a fun time. Yesterday, we went to the zoo!

It started out amusingly. Our hotel's doorman flagged down a cab for us. He told the driver, "the zoo." The driver looked confused, so he spoke more clearly, "The San Diego zoo. You don't know where that is? Balboa park?" The driver was saying something I couldn't hear. The doorman looked disgusted and waved the cabbie off saying, "Go next door to the Marriott."

The next cab driver, when asked if she knew where the zoo was, said "Yes, of course." So she won our business.

At the zoo we walked all over and saw everything. More or less. Except for the animals who were sleeping or just not out. But we saw two river otters playing, and an underwater exhibit where I watched a river doing somersaults with a shiny shell just inches from my nose. We got to see a young panda, a 3-day-old takir, and three baby warthogs! We saw a sloth bear standing up on his hind legs to get a good look at us.... and lots more, but for now I have to go start today's adventure.
