the story of an invisible girl
Good Things
This morning I had what is hopefully my last visit with my knee doctor. He measured my stability, asked me questions, and told me that I could basically do anything that I felt safe and comfortable doing. I talked about the pain and soreness I'm still experiencing, and he said that wasn't worrying to him. It will gradually get better, but probably take about a year before that goes away entirely. Therapy and strengthening exercises are the best thing for it. Well, a year post-surgery, so I'm halfway there. He told me I should come back if I have any questions or problems, but otherwise I'm free!

Last night D, a handyman friend of mine, came over to look at my falling-apart house with me. Here's the creepy thing though -- I got home from work yesterday, went upstairs, and I flipped the light switch out of habit. The light came on. No scary beeping, no sparks, and everything up there was working fine! According to the blinking clock, the power had been back for just over 4 hours. As far as I was concerned, that just made everything weirder. Electricity isn't something that generally comes and goes at random.

So when D arrived a bit later, we turned off that circuit, took off the cover of the electrical box, and looked around. We found where the wire went to a junction box and split off to go to the garage and the upstairs, so D took all the caps off of those wires to see how they looked. One of the input wires looked loose; it was barely touching the other wires it was linked to. Hopefully we had found the problem! D twisted all of the wires together very firmly then capped them back up. Then we tidied up the connections in the upstairs light switch that had caused the power to drop, just to be thorough.

We turned the power back on, and everything worked great. So far, it's all still working...hopefully it'll stay that way this time.

Then we turned our attentions to my broken air conditioning. I had turned it on before he'd arrived. The outside fan was working great, but we noticed that the inside fan had never kicked on. "Hmmmm," I said, "I wonder if my heat will turn the fan on?"

So I went upstairs and convinced my poor confused thermostat to turn off the AC and turn on the heat. The heat came on, but the blower never did. So the heating and cooling work, in theory, it's just not being distributed. Fun, fun. D took things apart and poked around, but none of his easier fixes worked. He thinks it's either the furnace's circuit board or the motor that needs replacing -- so now it's time to call in professional help. At least he helped narrow down the problem though....and at least this is happening at a time of year where I don't actually need heat or air conditioning, eh?

I won't be able to get this done until next week though, because tomorrow I'm jetting off to New York City with my sister and father! Looks like it'll be a fun weekend. Here's what we tentatively have planned: explore Chinatown and Little Italy, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, 2 dinners in the city with our extended family, I Am My Own Wife on Broadway, then Saturday in New Jersey with my grandmother. There will probably be other adventures squeezed in there as well before we head back on Sunday, with luck! Suggestions are always welcome, of course.

Oh, and finally: I have a new purplish hoodie, and you don't. (Well, it's possible you also have a new purplish hoodie, but you don't have my purplish hoodie, which is better than yours anyway.) So there.

Sounds like the best weekend ever!

So can you still yoga?

I hope so!

Yep, I can still do yoga....I'll just try to reduce the intensity next time so it doesn't hurt quite as much after.

Have fun in NYC. It has been 15 years since I was last there: besides driving through on I-95. I envy you going there and having a family get together.

Thanks, it'll be a good weekend. I go about once or twice a year, because most of my extended family lives in New York and New Jersey.
