Holiday Party

Yesterday was an eventful day. First I spent the afternoon helping A move. The poor kid is getting kicked out of her rented house effective January 2 -- what a rude way to begin the new year! Since she already had holiday travel plans, she's trying to get moved into her new space as early as possible. A whole bunch of us came over yesterday, and we carried boxes and boxes of stuff in and out of cars, elevators, and houses. We got a whole lot accomplished though, which is a good feeling!

After that, a hot shower, and a brief nap, I headed over to S&D's annual Christmas party. I dressed up, if only sort-of. I hadn't bought a new dress, and I didn't feel like wearing one of the few I already own. So instead I pulled out a cutsy gray pleated skirt I got over the summer, a stretchy red strapless top, and a gray angora cardigan.

Those combined with my Sexy But Cruel strappy high heels (they look awesome but quickly become incredibly painful if I try to actually walk or stand in them for very long) made me look fairly festive and dressed up. Oh, and I wore the fancy blue wool coat of course!

When I walked in a fire was roaring (in the fireplace, I mean), the place was packed with people, and it was very hot. I immediately took off the wool coat and soon removed the sweater as well. This left me in nothing but my strapless top. While I had originally pictured it looking fairly glamorous and fancy, once I was surrounded by people I felt really self-conscious. Especially since I was in constant fear of the darn thing slipping too low, without any straps to hold it up! I'm not used to going strapless.

So I spent most of the evening futzing with the top every few minutes, pulling it up and making sure it was in place. Maybe not quite as glamorous as I'd hoped, but when it was pulled properly in place it looked pretty good. The shoes definitely made the outfit, despite the fact that they were killing me.

So anyway, despite the wardrobe issues I had a lot of fun! There were lots of goodies to eat and old friends to talk to. I enjoyed catching up with some friends that I don't see very often. I met some new people as well, which was very cool. There were a few LJ people there, and we spent some time talking about the Addiction that is LiveJournal. It was a good party, and a great way to end the day.

One very amusing moment happened right as I was about to leave. I was cheerfully saying goodbyes and giving out hugs, and there was a guy there I didn't know. (Actually I might not have known the woman next to him either, although I thought she looked familiar. Social situations like this are scary for me, because I am terrible with names and faces! I am always afraid of introducing myself to somebody I've already met, so instead I sometimes find myself pretending to know complete strangers.)

Anyway the guy said to me, "Actually I haven't spoken with you this evening." I immediately held out my hand and introduced myself. He continued, "To tell you the truth, I didn't even think you were legal."

Somebody started teasingly asking him if he only spoke to legal women, but my jaw dropped. "Seriously?!" He nodded, and I just started laughing. Smiling, I held up three fingers and told him: "I'm thirty-three."

It was his turn to look shocked, and he started looking at me more closely, apparently trying to figure out where I had hidden the other sixteen years. We all laughed about it, and I thanked him.

Wow! I mean, I know my outfit was more cutsy than sophisticated, and I know I wore my hair down and had trouble not playing with it... but still! I'm used to being thought of as young, but I thought I was out of my teens at least. Pretty funny. It was an entertaining note to end the evening.

Then G walked me to my car, which was parked many miles away (okay, I exagerate a bit). He was even kind enough to carry my loot for me, so I could cling to his elbow and concentrate on walking. I hobbled along on my Cruel Shoes through the biting wind, then finally shivered my way into my car. But I didn't care: it had been a good day anyway.
