It turns out that they're giving us a little bit more than just an ice cream social. I got a bit of a bonus yesterday, profit-sharing type stuff. Not enough to retire on, but enough to buy myself a treat. The problem, of course, is that I'm not good at spending money. I need to have millions of dollars so I can buy everything, because otherwise I get cheap and indecisive and I end up just putting it in my savings. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you! I just think I oughta get myself something I've been coveting recently, if I can think if the "right" treat. So, if I don't just buy the cool knife set on the right (although it is apparently not easy to actually buy right now), what should I get? Here are some of my random thoughts, complete with reasons I shouldn't spend money on them, some more serious than others: - an ipod (but my Treo plays mp3's, but it doesn't hold as much as an ipod, only as much as whatever SD card I put in it, but it wouldnt' be an extra device to carry around)
- a laptop (but I'm supposed to get a laptop for work, but I haven't actually gotten one, but the order has been placed, when does an order turn into a laptop?)
- a new digital camera (my current one is actually still really nice, but it is 3 years old and only 2 megapixels, but it works fine, but the new ones are smaller and therefore more portable)
- laser hair removal (for my legs. oh gosh, I am so vain! But it would be cool to never have to shave again)
- oh heck, if I'm going to be vain, how about liposuction? I could be skinnier! (but that's really crazy, painfully vain, but embarrassingly tempting, even so...sigh)
- some bigger data cards for my current treo/mp3 player and my current camera (that would make them more useful, and that's very practical, but it just doesn't have the same excitement of a new toy. it's like spending your christmas money on underwear.)
- a trip (oh wait, I'm already going to europe. I could just buy some extra trip-stuff, I'm not sure what yet, but I'll certainly have plenty to spend money on once I'm there after all)
- I had other ideas too, but I'm forgetting what they are. Maybe I should buy skis, now that I had such fun skiing! Or...I dunno. I'm open to suggestions, too....

iPods are way over rated and way under valued...
|
Personally if you want a HD based mp3 player, I went with a creative Nomad Zen Xtra. A 40GB barely cost me 200, whereas the same ipod is nearly 400.
The best part I like about it so far (other than the obvious entire mp3 collection), is the fact it will hold data files as well, and is accessable through a usb mini. The 2nd best part over an iPod, is this doesn't care what format you have: mp3, wav (why I don't know), wma, aud, etc... it'll take em all (or nearly all). I do know for certain you aren't forced into a propriatary format.
I can't speak for iPod's crashworthyness, although I can say I've taken mine snowboarding, and wrecked a few times.. once or twice worthy of applause and it didn't so much as even stop playing or skip a beat (figureatively).

If you lose much more weight, you will not only seriously worry me, but blow away in a gentle spring breeze!

Better to have your own laptop.
a new digital camera (my current one is actually still really nice, but it is 3 years old and only 2 megapixels, but it works fine, but the new ones are smaller and therefore more portable)
Good idea it would not have too much bigger though.
some bigger data cards for my current treo/mp3 player and my current camera (that would make them more useful, and that's very practical, but it just doesn't have the same excitement of a new toy. it's like spending your christmas money on underwear.)
Very good idea you could put MP3's on them.
a trip (oh wait, I'm already going to europe. I could just buy some extra trip-stuff, I'm not sure what yet, but I'll certainly have plenty to spend money on once I'm there after all)
Save some for Europe!
Lipo is just a silly idea.

Wow, that's great, the knives look a little like the Gerber kitchen knives that I want (they have cool names, after famous swords, "Excalibur", "Durandal", "Snickersnee", are on display at MOMA in NY, and you can find them pretty cheap on ebay because they last forever) and the stand is sexy as all heck. I don't know if the steel is as good as the Gerbers, probably not, I've had Gerber knives before and used them to open cans of dog food with, as a hammer, and nothing would hurt them, besides they're the best because they were made in the US.

Hmm, the formatting got messed up. Maximize the window to read it all? Cool names like Snickersnee....
So, you should consider getting the Gerber kitchen knives, if you can't get the others, and if not that, you should get all your body hair, all over, removed with a "laser", by a mad scientist! Well, okay, except on your head, maybe. ;-)

bigger SD cards, at least
|
Definitely get a 1 GB SD card for a start (or maybe two, they're cheap at $68 each). Get a new digital camera, too. Hey, why not one that uses SD cards? There are several 3Mpix models that are trim, easy to use, powerful, and can be had for well under $300. My dad had an older version of the Canon SD100 that was very nice, and I've heard good things about the Minolta Dimage x31. Both of those are pretty slim-line cameras. Other good ones abound. DP Review is a fun site to play with, even if you don't buy one. It made me feel like a knowledgeable buyer when I got my camera last year. A personal laptop is nice to have. My girlfriend bought one from Dell a couple of weeks ago that was pretty good (2.4 GHz Celeron, 512MB memory, 40 GB HDD, 15" screen) for only $700. If not the laptop, then a little vanity buy wouldn't hurt. (Well, I'm sure liposuction *would* hurt, and have unpleasant side-effects even if it goes perfectly.)
