Skiing

(update: Wow, that phone/email post was really messy! Musta glitched somewhere. I've cleaned it up a little now....)

While I did ski down a black diamond (twice!), I certainly didn't do it with any expertise. I still do wide zig-zags, especially on steep parts, keeping more of a sideways direction than straight down.

That said, ya gotta start somewhere! I'm feeling more confident and having a blast. The steep slopes don't scare me so much.

I even tackled some mogals accidentally, 'cause they were on the edge of the Black we went down. Well, tackled might not be the right word... More like sliding worriedly sideways over them! They sure freaked me out. But I DID ski over them, intentionally or not.

We shared a table at lunch with an older couple who lived nearby. SG mentioned 'Rennie had knee surgery just a year ago.'

'Wow that's very brave,' said the woman.

'Well... There's a very fine line between bravery and stupidity,' I pointed out with a grin. 'I'm still alive so far though!'

I've started taking little blips off the path, briefly in and ou of the trees. It's kind of 'beginner cool'. Neat and fun, but not as hard as some of the technical skills my friends are working on. I like the kind that go up and past a tree or two then steeply back down.

I tried one like that right at the end of the day today, but it turned out to be higher and steeper than I'd expected. I got to the top and stopped because Yikes! It looked like a steep drop back to the path. More of a cliff than a hill. But there was nowhere else to go, so down I went.

It WAS awfully steep, and when I hit the path again I was a bit out of control. I thought I could get it back, and I almost did, but then I twisted and curved too far. I think my skating instincts and balance took over, because I was stumbling to keep my feet, then suddenly I was gliding down the hill backwards.

Unfortunately I don't know how to ski backwards! I also wasn't sure how to turn forwards or stop, so I just made myself fall. I tumbled for a bit, then finally I came to a stop. It was pretty funny! SG thought the turn was really cool too, apparently it looked neat. She sounded impressed - even though I fell.

So I'm definitely no expert, but I'm having a blast. It's been beautifully warm and sunny too - a perfect weekend.
