That's when he asked me, "Can I buy your leftovers?" I stopped in my tracks.
He wanted to buy my leftover dinner, without even knowing what was inside the box -- obviously he needed it way more than I did. I handed it to him immediately, "You want my leftovers? You can have them."
He again told me he would buy them, but I refused money. Then he offered me a flag. In retrospect, I probably should have taken a flag just to make him feel more dignified. But I didn't want a flag, and once I knew he was hungry I didn't want my leftovers or any money either.
So I just smiled and wished him a good evening, then continued walking down the sidewalk.
