A Serene Blitz - cellophane — LiveJournal
the story of an invisible girl
A Serene Blitz
I had a really great weekend. It was so cool seeing my Blitz buddies, at least the ones who made it this year that is. It was mostly all guys. Well, entirely all guys, except that the one fellow brought his daughter to a couple of meals. That was nice, so I wasn't the only girl the entire time at least.

On the plus side, I got a cool crown braided into my hair! On the minus side, braids don't last very long. A few photos were taken, not with my camera, but hopefully I'll get some links in a few days. The braids look nifty right now, even though they're a bit windblown. I'm guessing they won't look nearly as nice tomorrow, and I'll have to take them out.

So anyway, guess what I finally saw? Oh you'll never guess, I'll just have to tell you. Firefly!! I've been listening (and reading) to people talk about this show forever, without having any idea what it was. I'm always a little bit behind the times, of course, so I never saw it before it got canceled. I'm not sure why I didn't see it -- maybe I don't get that channel? That would be my guess, because I don't get any pay channels.

Either that, or I just wasn't informed that I should be watching the show until it was too late. I just never realized! Or I wasn't paying attention. Any of those are entirely possible.

So it turns out I liked it auite a lot! I'm not surprised that I did, since value the opinions of many of the people I saw raving about it. One thing did suprise me about the show though: I knew it was science fictiony, but I had no idea that it was also a western! What's up with that? Cowboys iiiiiinnnnn spaaaaaaace! Crazy, but fun. I have seen four episodes so far, or maybe five. It's pretty cool! I'm looking forward to seeing more episodes, and then checking out this fancy-schmancy Serenity movie that everyone's talking about.

I just discovered that I get the Science Fiction channel, and it is showing episodes of Firefly right now. Unfortunately it's probably further into the timeline than I am, but I'm still going to Replay it and watch some. I have a lot to catch up on.

Aside from watching the cowboy/spaceships, we did a lot of feasting. LOTS of good food! I brought fresh Astoria baklava to contribute, and I enjoyed baklava for breakfast each morning. Yummy. We had a potluck on friday, and went out for several meals also. We did a bunch of walking, and a lot of socializing.

All and all, an excellent weekend. Now I just need to get some sleep, because I've got that darn work thing coming up early tomorrow morning.

I saw Serenity twice last week; it's wonderful. Don't let anyone spoil it for you - block your ears and don't follow links!

Cowboys in space isn't really a new idea. In fact, I understand that Star Trek was originally pitched as "'Wagon Train' in space". (I have no idea what 'Wagon Train' is, but I presume it's cowboy-related.) This one really gets it right, though, and that itself may be new.

I haven't seen any of Firefly, but I saw Serenity and really liked it. A lot. From what I've heard, you get a lot more out of the movie if you've seen the series. I'm less sure that the reverse is true; I'm still a little reluctant to check out the TV show. But I fondly await any new material from the same universe.

I liked the tv show quite a lot -- especially the two pilots. (I'm not entirely clear on why there were two pilots, but there were. They were both really good, you should watch 'em!)

I'm always a little bit behind the times, of course,

Don't worry, I'll always be around as someone you can point to as being farther behind the times than you.

I'm still catching up on Hugo winners in the 50's. I've got most of the Hugo winners on either ebooks or books-on-mp3. One of these days I'm going to have to do a blitz and move up a decade or two. It's hard to listen to books-on-tape lately because I don't have any pockets in my bike clothes. Gotta figure out some mp3 player mounting (is that an iPod in your lycra shorts or...)

I have Firefly on DVD but haven't watched any yet. But I'm at least 15 years behind on movie watching as well. I did finally watch all of BlackAdder, 4 years after getting the DVDs, and that was fun. I expect I'll see Serenity sometime around 2015. Not sure if I'll watch the show first or see if it makes sense without that.

Well that's a relief! At least I'm not the most behind.

You don't have back pockets in your jerseys? I've always thought that was the best part of bike clothes...so convenient!

They are indeed convenient, but unfortunately I'm too cheap to buy bike jerseys. I have only one, a Nashbar Colorblock that I think I paid $20 for. I do like the pockets on it.

The rest of my shirts are from AlertShirts. They're ANSI yellow, moisture wicking microfiber poly T shirts for $8, which is hard to argue with when you need a few to change into day after day, but they don't have pockets.

Also, this time of year is inconvenient; too cold for "just jersey" and not cold enough most mornings to add a jacket.

This morning was typical; at about 50*F I'm wearing long sleeve underarmor top with an alertshert over, and a reflective mesh vest over that. Bike shorts and tights on the bottom.

Once it gets well down into the 30's I'll add a jacket (mostly unzipped until it gets down to the 20's) and that'll give me a pocket. I wore a jacket yesterday (24*F on the ride) but I'm out of the habit of putting on my sound system and I forgot.

Come next summer I'll probably get another one or two cheap jerseys. Or maybe I can sacrifice one of the AlertShirts to make rear pockets for the others!

There is a three comic book miniseries to read as well!

If you're willing to watch them again or wait for me to catch up to where you're at, I can borrow the DVD set from someone.

Want to watch them here and there? It's better than Robot Chicken. < grin > (But it takes a longer attention span.)

Sure, if you can find somebody willing to give up their DVD's for awhile! i found them fairly captivating, myself. My replay will record one on the 21st, but that's all it's found so far.
