I think it's an interesting commentary on our society that it's become socially acceptable to injure/kill innocent people in order to save yourself from injury.

Not only are big trucks more likely to hurt/kill others in an accident, they're far more likely to cause accidents in the first place. High center of gravity, reduced visibility, inferior handling, and other factors make them a menace on the road and in the driveway/parking lot.

The stories recently about kids getting killed in backover accidents were sickening to me, but interesting in one regard: nobody started saying "Maybe you shouldn't be driving a huge truck that you can't properly manage" - they said "radar/sonar proximity backup alarms should be mandatory."

See, it's someone else's fault. Not their fault for buying a huge car they didn't need and couldn't properly control, not their fault for not looking what they were doing, it was someone else's fault for not forcing them to buy a piece of technology to keep them from killing other people. How long will it be before there's a lawsuit against car mfgs for not including all available safety features in all cars (if there hasn't already been one)?

I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a separate driving test for different sized vehicles. Anything longer than a mid-sized car, you need to take a separate test; maybe, parallel parking and cone avoidance while driving a Ram 3500 duelly. Another rating for big stuff like RVs. It'd be nice to see a rating for trailering as well, but that's unlikely.

I think having extra driving tests is not a bad idea at all. They are harder to drive properly, after all! People should prove they know how, so they're not a hazard....

My fantasy has been that we should have a "small car lane", just like there is a "car pool lane" in some places. Basically the leftmost lane on any major road should be reserved for cars only, to encourage larger vehicles to converve gas and drive more cautiously.
