When fmh and sexyscholar's little one was born, the nurse mentioned that a spinal tap is routine for any newborn (under 3 months) who comes in with a fever - evidently to make the point that it's a good idea to avoid exposing him to our germy selves. Jeez. Add one more thing to the 'sucks to be a baby' list.

I think that the reason they do that is that they want to make sure that it's not anything really nasty causing the fever. Newborns are so small (even the big ones like mine), and a fever can be caused by anything from a simple cold to a bacterial infection picked up during birth....
