I hate trying to carry a bag on my wrist; a bit of wind, a sudden movement, and it's in the spokes. (Of course I ride drops, if you're riding an upright YMMV.)

I favour jersey pockets; I wouldn't have any concerns about a sub sticking out. (And if that didn't work, you could always drop it down the back of your jersey and pretend you're a domestique. :)

Or you could just electrical-tape it to your top tube. :)

I don't think a footlong sub in a bag could reach my spokes, I'm riding flat bars fairly upright.
But I've only done that once, in general I don't forget my bag. I only have one proper jersey with rear pockets though; I'm too cheap to buy a $25 jersey for every day of the week, so I bought $8 alertshirts.

Oh my gosh, I remember once as a kid riding to school with a halloween costume in a bag I was carrying by hand. I guess it wouldn't fit in my backpack or something? But yes, it wedged itself FIRMLY into my spokes. Not only did I go over the handlebars (ouch), but it then took me probably 10 minutes or somehting just trying to extricate the darn thing from between the spokes and fork.
