Chocolate Pie

My family had our "Christmas" dinner on friday night, because that was when everybody was in town (Chicago) and off of work. My mother made a fabulous meal which ended with not just one but TWO homemade pies. Chocolate and pecan.

Will, almost four years old now, ate some of his piece of chocolate pie then asked to leave the table. I think he was too excited by the unopened presents to be able to leave them alone for very long. Tilly (who just turned one today!) was released from her high-chair and set on her brother's empty seat.

Before desert had been served, her parents decided not to give her any. She wouldn't know any differently, and she'd had enough rich foods recently for one so young. It made sense... she would be having plenty more treats before the weekend ended.

We were all relaxing over our pies and coffees, having random grownupy conversation, when suddenly my mom said, "Oh! Look at Tilly!"

Somehow she had stood up on the dining-room chair without anybody noticing and started helping herself to her brother's leftover chocolate cream pie. She was standing there, happily feeding it to herself with both sticky little hands, chocolate smeared all over her face. She ignored us completely, smiling a big smile, and she kept right on eating.

Fortunately my niece is so adorable that she can easily get away with such games. In fact, I think my brother even gave her another small slice of pie as well. We just laughed and took plenty of pictures of her... none with my camera though, so I won't have any to share until later.
