Friday - cellophane — LiveJournal
the story of an invisible girl
I had a really lovely day friday. I slept in a little, then went to an uneventful doctor appointment. Then F came over, since we both were lucky enough to have the day off, we hung out for a bit, and then we went out to lunch! I love going out for breakfast/lunch.

We discussed a few options for the afternoon -- a walk, a car wash, a little shopping.... but when I got home, all I really wanted to do was cuddle up with a good book for awhile. So we did. It was just a nice low-stress way to spend the afternoon. I even took a short nap. Lovely!

We decided we wanted to do something a little differnt friday night, but we weren't sure what. Searching through the Metro Times, F hit on the idea of a play. We found one that sounded very interesting, that was at a convenient time, so we made reservations for a couple of tickets.

The theater we were going to, Planet Ant, is in Hamtramck. Hamtramck is a Polish district in Detroit. Naturally we decided that the best thing for dinner would be to seek out a Polish restaurant nearby. Not knowing exactly where we were going, we just drove around looking for something good. We stumbled across a nice place and enjoyed sauerkraut, sausage, perogis, and stuffed cabbage.

Next we went to see the play. A Number was a two-actor play about cloning, and a sad and entangled mystery between a father and his son. The story was dark, fascinating, and both of the actors were very talented. Definitely a worthwhile show! Especially for only $10 with a student discount ($15 otherwise).

We had read that after the play, the same theatre had a comedy show. It was a scripted performance put on by an improv group. At first we weren't sure if we'd stay, but I'm glad we did. It was funny and entertaining, a good contrast to the earlier show. Good fun!

Still energized after the comedy, we decided that perhaps some dancing was in order. I haven't been to City Club in around a year, and haven't visited regularly in much longer than that.... but it's always a neat place to go. We were half-way there already, so we decided to swing by. We weren't dressed to go out, but the cool thing about City Club is that you can dress as normal or weird as you want.

Although weird is definitely preferred. Great people-watching there!

I was pleased to run into a few friends, giving me extra people to converse and catch up with. I did some dancing, did some roaming, and even saw F once or twice... *laugh* He was busy being his social self, but it was okay. I'm glad we went; we both had an excellent time.

Like I said, a lovely day. I haven't enjoyed that kind of relaxation combined with interesting and fun in far too long. It was almost like I was on vacation or something! Quite nice.

What a great way to spend a day off. Something to treasure in your memory chest!

Yes! It's interesting: we had a bad day saturday, but I saw somebody post something to the effect of "write the good times in stone, the bad times in sand".

I thought it was a cool approach, so (at least for this weekend) I'm only thinking about the good!

Wow! that sounds like a really great day, full of many of the best things in life. I think you're lucky that F likes to share things like that with you. And he, of cours,e is lucky to have you to share them with as well. :)

I wanted to get my car washed while the weather was warm... next time!

*smile* Yes, it was a good day.

Actually despite the discussion, I didn't get my car washed until sunday when the weather was all crappy again. But I didn't want to put it off longer, so I just went ahead and did it anyway.

So it got dirty again quickly, but it's not as dirty as it would have been....

Damn, two people I knew were at CC last night, and somehow I didn't see either of you. Or any of you. Or something.

You'd think people would see me, but I suppose at CC I'm far from the only bald guy in the building :-P.

Anyway, we were there last night until right around 2:00am, then we split once the bouncers were launching into the Gestapo routine of drink-pulling. What time were you there?

Don't worry, we were there friday night. I'm sure one of us would have spotted the other otherwise!

Polish Village is the place to go in Hamtramck, although I've heard Under the Eagle is good, too.

Amusingly enough, we noticed it, and noticed that it had two names.

"Under the Eagle Restaurant" and "Restaurant Under the Eagle." One listed under the other. :)

Have to remember it for next time. Thanks!

Totally off-topic - do you have a relative named Joyce? Same last name as yours?
renniekins From: renniekins Date: February 26th, 2007 01:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
None that I know of....but believe it or not, my last name is somewhat common in Poland. Or at least not uncommon.

Okay. The reason I was asking was because someone with that name signed up for my chocolate mailing list at the event on Saturday, and I just thought it would be really funny if you turned out to be related!

cool! that sounds like it was a perfectly fun evening!

but I had to ask... "scripted performance" by an "improv group"... isn't that a bit of an oxymoron?? :-)

The improv group won the right to put on the performance by winning the Big Improv Whatever that was held there. If I remember correctly, every Monday night is improv. This was a (hilarious) mostly scripted performance with some minor improvisation. It was a great time.

...with some minor improv.

thanks for the explination!
