the story of an invisible girl
Book Seven
Science fiction should have plenty of spaceships and aliens and battles... but it also needs an interesting plot and some sympathetic characters. This book had it all.

Old Man's War, by John Scalzi

The book is about a future earth, which is packed full. There are colonists on other planets, but the only way most of earth's population can join them is by first joining the army (colonial defense force). The only catch is: you can't join the army until age 75.

Although I've known John for quite some time, and I enjoy dancing with him, this is the first of his books that I've bought. I'm mildly ashamed of that fact -- although I have at least read another of his works online (Agent to the Stars).

It turns out that not only is he a fun dancer, he can write a good story as well! This book captivated my attention from the start, and I really enjoyed it. I liked both the characters and the ideas, so it was an excellent read.

I have to say I was a little disappointed with how it ended, but that didn't ruin the book for me by any means. The book was entertaining -- definitely recommended.

Oh weird! John Scalzi was at one of the JournalCons I attended, and his blog and books were always brought up by panelists (I went to 3 different cons), because lots of online journalers are aspiring novelists and whatnot. So I know him from that, but not personally or anything. It's been a while since I've heard his name. Small world, though.

I actually liked this book, and please tell him I said so. It's a completely different take on the future... where we aren't always the dominate species.

I wasn't so sure about getting his second book, since it didn't as such good ratings, I believe its "Ghost Brigade" or something like that.

Yeah, the Ghost Brigades sounds like it's more about the end part of Old Man's War, the part I didn't like as much... But I enjoyed his style. I might borrow that one, but probably not rush out and buy it. (:
