Hair and Avatars
I remember when I first thought about cutting my hair. I wasn't sure how I wanted it to look, or what would look good on me. At work one day I started playing with my Yahoo avatar, trying out different hairstyles on it. I had a couple of coworkers looking over my shoulder, and we were discussing the various options. The "create your avatar" thingy on Yahoo is fun, and there are a lot of hair styles to choose from.

I found one that looked like I'd originally thought I might like it (short and spiky), but it was bright pink. I couldn't find one in brown like that though. Also I wasn't sure if I was ready for as drastic a length-change as that.

Eventually I found a nifty compromise -- not long like my style at the time, but not crazy-short. My two coworkers both agreed that it would look good on me. It was shoulder-length, with shorter layers in the front.

I clicked "print". Irish looked at me disbelievingly. "You're going to take your yahoo avatar to your hair stylist?"

"Well, sure. How else will she know how to cut it?" I looked at the printout of the cartoon face with cute hair. "It might look a little different though, since she just has a stick neck instead of a real one. But I still think the hair style will work."

That was several months ago. Honestly, the avatar's style didn't look as good on me as it did on her. It wasn't bad, just not as nifty. So I went for an even shorter style, my current one (see icon). I'm more satisfied with this one I think. I like the way I look in the mirror, and I've gotten a bunch of compliments on it. Sadly this most recent version (since yesterday's trimming) just doesn't seem to photograph well, or at least I haven't succeeded in getting a good hair-photo since yesterday.

My remote coworkers and I use yahoo instant messenger a lot to communicate with one another at work. Today one of my co-workers pointed out that my avatar was still dressed for winter. Since it seems like Spring is finally here, I spent some time today (probably too much time if I am honest) updating my avatar for warmer weather. She is now wearing capris, leaning on a bicycle. Much springier.

Naturally I tried to set her hair to look like my new style -- unfortunately it turns out that Yahoo doesn't offer a matching hair style! I was quite disappointed. They have my style but longer, or they have a shorter messier version (that I would love but my thin hair simply would not achieve), or they have a style like mine but with bangs.

Eventually I went with a style that is the same length as mine, but more tucked behind the ears. Still, it's not really my hair. (To be honest, it's not my bike either that she's riding, but the hair bothers me more.)

But now it's got me thinking. Should I try bangs? The avatar looked good with them, and it might look very cute. But the problem with bangs is: if you try it and decide you don't like it, you're stuck with bangs for a very long time. So I probably won't -- even if yahoo thinks my hair style doesn't exist without them....

When I was thinking about my current hair style, I took some digital photos and then edited them to see what I would look like without hair. Maybe you could do the same to see if you would like it? Not getting rid of all your hair, of course. Well- you could. I'm sure it would look good on you, but most of society like hair on women, so you might want to stay with that.

Try photoshopping that pic in Paint, putting a suggestion of wispy bangs in. I think they'd look cute. You have a good high forehead, you could take LIGHT bangs without looking swamped by your hair. And it'd give your hair a bit more bounce!

Bangs are a crapshoot - I decided I wanted them and went and got them THAT DAY. I spent a week thinking I looked like Spock and then I loved them. I'd go with your gut.

I do not think bangs would be a good look for you.

By the way are you and your new hairstyle coming to Penguicon?

I wondered why work let you use Yahoo Messenger on the job.

Silly, coworkers! Printing out your avatar isn't that weird. I mean, you have to let the stylist know what you want or you'll be there forever tweaking the haircut.

I once drew 4 egg shapes and sketched a haircut from all angles. I loved it because I didn't have to explain myself at all.

I am obviously so behind the times. I had an excellent stylist in Ann Arbor, and would simply ask her, "Would bangs [or cut to my chin, or whatever]" work with my face?

And she would tell me: "You have no forehead, so no bangs for you, since it shortens your forehead and your face." "You can cut to the chin, but only if we bring the back up like so."

And I trusted her. She knew how to make me look good, much better than I knew.

I never even thought of testing it in Photoshop. That's what I need now that I want to do something with these curls! You are so smart.
