Well, if they're not from an English-descended family, such a bizarre old English saying might well be unfamiliar.

I've heard it tons of times in the US; it is pretty commonplace here. I was thinking about why she wouldn't know it. The confused woman's voice made me wonder -- she didn't sound like a non-native speaker, but she didn't *quite* sound like, well, like me. It was a bit "ghetto", but not uneducated either... Strange combination. Perhaps she wasn't native-born, but was here long enough to lose most accent?

Anyway, regardless of the source of the misunderstanding, it was very amusing. (:
