Give Life
My calendar for today reads: "11:15 - Bleed Berkley". I wrote it quickly, so it is not very clear. But I know that it means I was scheduled to give blood at the Berkley donation center this morning.

It was a slow-moving morning for me, and I wasn't hungry when I awoke, but I didn't think about the fact that an 11:15 appointment had me actually bleeding more around noon. Kind of lunch time, and I still hadn't eaten. Oops! Fortunately I have a strong constitution, and felt okay. I had lots of juice and cookies after to make up for it, then stopped for a gyro pita on the way home.

But anyway, as many as three lives helped today, and it's not even 2pm. Go me!

Giving blood is cool. You should do it too.

Wish I still could. Had nearly made my 3-gallon pin back 15-20 years ago when they kicked me out of the club. Burns my butt anymore when people tell me how badly off the RC is -- since the reason they kicked me out is probably false and they admitted it at the time.

You too?

That's got to be frustrating. I've been deferred before, but never permanently. *hug*

Go you, for sure. I'm another bummed-out Red Cross reject. First it was that I was too pale. (Seriously. I was actually on the table waiting for a needle and they rejected me.) Then I contracted TB. (Also seriously. The RC did change the TB rule, though, and I'm no longer disqualified by it.) Now, I'm so consistently anemic that I can't reliably keep my hematocrit high enough to donate. Unreal!

Done whining. Good on you for donating. :)

Darn it, I'm sorry they won't let you join the club! Sometimes I have anemia-issues, but usually I pass the second test....

I really need to do so more frenquently. I gave a couple or three months ago, so I'm able to do it again, but I have to admit I mostly do it when I see a drive and I have the time to stop for it, rather than making an active effort to go find one.

Thanks for the nudge.

You called it exactly!
I used to give blood all the time when it was "convenient" (working in a school district it was soooo easy, I would literally stumble across drives while fixing computers around the district) but now that my job has morphed into more deskbound/meetings/overtime I have to admit I haven't gone out of my way to make many appointments myself...

So, directly because Ren makes giving sound hip and YOUR comment was exactly the on target nudge that I needed, I just went to https://www.givelife.org/index.cfm?group=home&advsearch=1 and found out the donation center I drive past nearly every evening has a couple of later evening hours. I should be getting my "be nice to me" sticker next Wednesday, and yes, I do plan on smugly wearing it the next day at work.

Thanks for a combination of nudges that worked!

Re: Convenience

Yay! Very glad to have helped with the nudging. (:

You're welcome! (:

I would like to, but I tend to pass out. The only time I didn't faint during a blood draw was when I was pregnant. I am weird.

I used to give blood quite regularly, but then kinda got out of the habit.
I really should get back into it. The blood donor clinics come around here every couple of months, you have to find out and make a real effort to get there during the few hours they're not rushed off their feet, but yeah - it's worth doing. I'm privileged to have ample supplies of very good quality O- red-stuff.

Yes, see if you can find a good time to do it! It's definitely worth it.

Funny you mention it. I just got a phone call today letting me know there will be a blood drive going on in Redford on Monday. I already planned to go.

Once I passed the minimum weight necessary to qualify, I was promptly disqualified for living in Europe too long. I don't think I'll ever give blood, at this point. I don't think they'll ever let me.
renniekins From: renniekins Date: January 31st, 2008 02:15 am (UTC) (Link)
How very rude of them. The strange time limits they have regarding Europe are confusing - not to mention they change regularly. My sister used to be disqualified, but now she isn't. I haven't visited there long enough for me to have to figure them all out though.
