Club Ride
There was no rain today, and I successfully completed my first bike club ride of the season! Thirty miles. This ride happens every wednesday night, and I've been meaning to join them for ages. The one time I tried though, they had wimped out due to rain! Not this time though.

I've only ridden a handful of times this season. I feel out of shape, and I want to ride more and faster. As I told some of the folks there, "I figure the best way to get me to push hard is to have people to chase." The pace was good - fast enough to be work, but not so fast that I wasn't able to keep up. The people were friendly. It also starts just a mile and a half from my house, so nice and convenient. I'm really glad I finally made it! Hopefully I'll be able to make it a regular wednesday thing when I'm in town.

There is also a similarly paced ride on monday nights, folks were telling me. It starts a little farther away, but at the end they ride right by my house. So I could ride there, drop off at my house, and still end up riding about the same distance. I'll plan to give that a try next week.

Yesterday I decided to walk/jog two miles barefoot on my treadmill. I don't remember who, but somebody was telling me not too long ago that running barefoot is supposed to be good for your feet. I figured I'd give it a try, although I did more walking than running. I found my feet to hurt a lot less than I'd expected... but I'm still not convinced that this was better for them than wearing my nice running shoes.

Between two miles barefoot yesterday, and today's thirty mile bike ride, my legs and feet are beat! I feel good though, and pleased with myself. It was fun! I'm going to be sore tomorrow.... but it'll be a good kind of sore.

Where is this ride at, and what is the average speed? It'd be neat to join, but I've got a mountain bike with touring tires.

There's also a Wednesday ride at Stony Creek on the mountain trails, if you are interested.

The rides starts at the Royal Oak library. It's with this group:

Here's their calendar:

This ride is an "entry" pace, which they have marked at 16mph average. I'd say it might have averaged less than that on whole, because there were turns/lights/catching up and stuff, but on the longer stretches that's a reasonable estimate.

Hmm. That's clearly a road bike ride. :\

Yeah... I have a road bike. There were one or two guys on mountain type bikes, but I'm guessing they were riding those because they considered this a "slow" ride!!

The folks in this club take their biking seriously.... it's more of a racing club, but I find that their "entry" or "recovery" rides are manageable. Plus a lot of fun.

That's understandable. When I was out on the trails tonight there were a couple of the... well... very professional guys who think nothing of passing you close enough that you worry about them hitting you.

I've got some nice touring tires for my bike, but I don't think I'd still be able to keep up at that pace. It's just a bit too heavy for me.

I have heard good things about these "five fingers" shoes that are like toe socks and snug on your feet, so they feel like you are barefoot but provide some protection.

(For people who want to run barefoot outside)

Dunno if it would make it seem less weird on the treadmill or not.

Oh, and the first group ride I ever did just happened to be in the rain. Silly road bikers.
